Summary
Cropped image from this file. Copyright 1967, Fiction Publishing Company. This file has been cropped and uploaded for the express purpose of illustrating the most well-known form of the Saint stick figure logo, for use on the article Simon Templar. This logo (or variants thereof) appears on virtually every edition of Simon Templar Saint adventures, and was created by the illustrator Eugene Hastain, a friend of the author Leslie Charteris. As a logo of well-known literary franchise, its use in Wikipedia is supported by fair use as it is a unique logo connected to only one franchise. Precedent for use of such logos includes the lead image (as of 3/7/2007) on James Bond of that franchise's 007/gun logo. Per the rules indicated on the Logo image tag (see below), such a logo may be used to illustrate the "item in question" which in this case is Simon Templar and the Saint franchise. There is no possible way the use of this logo in the Wikipedia article could have any effect on the commercial value of said logo or of the magazine from which this version was scanned. The use of this artwork also: 1. reduces the need to use a photograph of one of the actors who has played the role, thereby avoiding fair use issues with regards to an image of a person as well as WP:NPOV issues regarding which portrayer to illustrate and 2. it reduces the need to use a copyrighted book cover as an illustration by instead using a very small component of a 40-year-old magazine cover.

Portion used |
Cropped portion |
Low resolution? |
Is low and only as much resolution as necessary to identify and show the style of artwork used for the article, not enough to be used for piracy. The fact this is only a portion of the original cover renders it impractical for use in producing a pirated copy of the magazine issue. |
Purpose of use |
Illustrates the article Simon Templar which provides enough critical commentary for fair use to be applicable. It is an image of a famous and widely used logo/symbol used as universal branding for the Simon Templar "The Saint" series of books and stories. See Summary above for further detail. |
Replaceable? |
No free equivalent can equal this image (any would be a derivative of this artwork or similar artworks). |
Other information |
Image in this form is already widely distributed to identify the artwork so we degrade no market value by providing it ourselves. |
