Historische Bedeutung Das Heliometer der Kuffner-Sternwarte war ursprünglich ein Meßinstrument, mit dem sehr kleine Winkel gemessen werden konnten. Von dieser sehr seltenen Gerätegattung ist es das größte der Welt!

Haupteinsatzgebiet war die Messung von Fixsternparallaxen, also die Ermittlung von Entfernungen von Fixsternen.

Die Optik stammt wieder von Steinheil, München, die Mechanik von Repsold & Söhne, Hamburg. Das Heliometer wurde 1893 geliefert und 1896 in Betrieb genommen.
