Gilles Lorin (born 1973) is a French / American photographer and printmaker known for his work with historical photographic techniques, including platinum-palladium printing, cyanotype, wet collodion, and gold leaf, which he use to explore themes of impermanence, nature, and classical aesthetics, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary artistic vision. Gilles Lorin’s highly personal perspective on the delicate beauty of our planet, which he immortalises in exquisite, serene, photographic compositions.[1]
Early Life and Education
Gilles Lorin was born in Aix-en-Provence and grew up in the village of Megève in the French Alps. As a teenager, Lorin discovered darkroom photography and began exploring drawing, painting, and sculpture during his high school years in Florida, USA. He pursued higher education at Loyola University in Chicago, studying business administration, art history, and applied arts. In 1992, he relocated to Paris and attended the Université Paris I - Sorbonne, earning a master's degree with honors in art history and archaeology.[2]
Career
Lorin’s career is marked by a dedication to traditional photographic printmaking. He specializes in platinum-palladium printing, a 19th-century process renowned for its rich tonal range and archival quality. His experimentation with cyanotype, wet collodion and photogravure techniques further distinguishes his work, offering a unique fusion of historic and modern influences. He revisits older photographic processes, such as the cyanotype and platinum palladium prints, in novel ways. What distinguishes Lorin’s work is how he uses gold leaf and alloys for each separate element to create a unique colour palette and achieve a certain aesthetic. Each meticulous piece takes about a month to make.[3] [He] aims to change our perception of photography by inviting us to reconnect with its materiality. While he has made historical printing processes his guiding thread, Gilles Lorin primarily seeks to reveal their poetry and modernity.[4]
Artistic Style and Influence
Lorin’s work is inspired by classical art, philosophy, and historical photographic traditions. His compositions often reflect themes of balance, impermanence, and interconnectedness, drawing influence from Daoism, Chinese & Japanese aesthetics, and European art history.
His use of gold leaf in platinum-palladium prints adds a rare and luminous quality to his images, elevating photography to a painterly and almost sculptural dimension. By reviving these meticulous hand-crafted processes, Lorin aims to create works that transcend time, inviting contemplation and introspection.
