2027 Men's Rugby World Cup – South America qualification

The qualifying process for the 2027 Men's Rugby World Cup for South America began in August 2024, with eight teams competing for one direct qualification spot into the final tournament. The runner-up will play the bottom side ranked in the 2025 World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup for a second direct place in the final tournament and the loser progressing to the Final Qualification Tournament. The third-ranked side will also qualify for a place in the Final Qualification Tournament.[1]
Format
Qualifying began with two elimination matches between the bottom four ranked teams in South America; Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru and Venezuela.
The first round consisted of a semi final and final format, with World Rugby Rankings dictating the semi-final match-ups, with the winner of the final, advancing to a repechage match against the bottom placed side of round 2.
Round 2 featured Brazil, Chile and Paraguay in a round robin, format, where the top two sides advanced to the fourth round. Whilst the bottom placed side faced off against the winner of round 1 to remain in qualification contention.
Round 4, will see the top two sides from Round 2 and the winner of round 3 repechag, join Uruguay in the final stage of qualification. This round will be a straight in a knockout format over two legs, with the winner directly qualifying for the World Cup as Sudamérica Rugby 1. The runner-up will face the bottom ranked side from the final round of the Pacific qualification process in a Sudamérica / Pacific play-off match to qualify for the World Cup. The third placed side, advances to the Final Qualification Tournament.

Eight teams will compete during for the South America qualifiers for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with Argentina the only team thus far qualified from the Region. (Rankings as of first qualification match in this region)

Round 1
The first round was contested by four teams in a knockout format, which was held in Medellín, Colombia. It saw Colombia (42) play Costa Rica (93) and Venezuela (78) play Peru (80).[2]

Rules for classification: Tiebreakers for teams tied on points: 1) Number of matches won; 2) Difference between points for and against; 3) Total number of points for; 4) Aggregate number of points scored in matches between tied teams; 5) Number of matches won excluding the first match, then the second and so on until the tie is settled.

Round 4
The fourth round will see a straight in a knockout format, seeded by 1 v 4 & 2 v 3, with the winner qualifying for the World Cup as Sudamérica Rugby 1, whilst the runner-up will progress to a play-off against the bottom placed side from the Pacific. The third placed game will also see the winner of that match, advance to the Final Qualification Tournament.[3]
