San Lorenzo (Spanish pronunciation: [san loˈɾenso]) is a city in the Central Department in Paraguay. It is a suburb of Asunción, and the third most populous city in Paraguay, with a population of 252,561. The National University of Asunción campus is located in San Lorenzo, that's why it is sometimes known as "Ciudad Universitaria" (University City). The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Lorenzo.

History

San Lorenzo was originally a Jesuit ranch dedicated to the exploitations of plantations known as Ñu Guazú, which was erected in the 17th century. In 1767 the Jesuits were expelled from the country, and a town was established on August 10, 1775, by Captain Agustín Fernando de Pinedo [es].[1]

Geography

San Lorenzo is located in the Central Department of Paraguay, about 9km from the capital of the country. It is a part of Gran Asunción. It borders the cities of Luque to the north, Ñemby to the south, Fernando de la Mora to the west, and Capiatá to the east.

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification, San Lorenzo has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) with hot summers, warm autumns and springs, and relatively mild winters. The average annual temperature is 30 °C. The coldest month is July and the hottest is January. Rainfall occurs greatly throughout the year; only June and July are semi-dry while the other months are rainy.

Demographics

With 225,395 inhabitants in 2022, it is the fifth most populated city in Paraguay. It houses populations from different departments of Paraguay; At the beginning of the day, about 850,000 people enter, who then leave at the end of the day. San Lorenzo is located at the junction of several national and departmental routes.

Economy

San Lorenzo is the most important city for finances, economics, and education of the Central Department.[1] The main economic activities in San Lorenzo are trade and manufacturing. In the main roads of the city, electronics stores, home-appliance stores, Supermarkets, pawn shops, and real estate stores can be observed. The supplies market is also one of the largest in the nation, with good architecture and the greatest movement in the country. the main Banks, financial companies, and cooperatives are located in and around the main roads as well.[1]

The city has various sites for recreation and leisure, as well as tourist and historical attractions that are of interest to both residents and visitors. Below are some main tourist attractions organized in the neighborhoods in which they are located:

  • Barrio San Pedro (microcenter): Neo-Gothic style cathedral and headquarters of the Municipality. The Cathedral is one of the main tourist attractions that the city has, it is located in the center of the city, around the construction there is thick vegetation with its small squares and the plaza Cerro Corá, as well as an exclusively pedestrian street. On the block of the Municipal Palace is the Dairy Train Station Cultural Center, a reconstructed building whose original dates back to 1892, where it was the terminal of the San Lorenzo Train that linked said city with Asunción, through 18 km of railway tracks. It had 18 "Paras" whose service was carried out until 1936.


  • Villa Universitaria: campus of the National University of Asunción, Hospital de Clínicas, Pinedo Shopping Center and Ciclovía San Lorenzo. The cycle path located next to the National University of Asunción constitutes a tourist site to receive those people who love nature and physical exercise.
  • Barcequillo: large pharmaceutical industries are located in this neighborhood (Lasca Laboratories and Ethical Laboratories). A large shopping center (La Fuente Shopping Center and Salemma Super Center). The National Service for Animal Quality and Health (SENACSA). The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG). The Paraguayan-German University (UPA). The Football Club (Libertad de Barcequillo).
  • Capilla del Monte: building of the Supreme Court of Justice, where courts and the Court of First Instance of the Central Department operate.
  • Barrio La Victoria: are the Cuartel de la Victoria, the Rayadito park and the Acosta Ñú Children's Pediatric Hospital.
  • Barrio Santa María: is located at km 14 and a half of route number 2, where the Headquarters of the San Lorenzo Cooperative and the Cerro Porteño de Kokuere Club are located.

Education

The city has several educational institutions at the basic, technical and university level, both public and private institutions. Prestigious institutions of school education exist in the city such as the Italo Paraguayo Institute, San Lorenzo National School, Dra Marina Isabel De Ferras School Génesis National School, the Sagrada Familia Institute governed by the Janeriana Congregation of Urgel, the Gabriela Mistral Private School, as well as the Saturio Ríos Regional Education Center (CRESR), named in memory of the first telegraph operator in South America of Sanlorenzano origin, considered the most big of the country.

The Paraguayan American Cultural Center (CCPA) and other related institutes promote the teaching of the English Language. For their part, some of the university institutions that have their headquarters in the city are: National University of Asunción, Universidad Paraguayo Alemana, Universidad Tecnológica Intercontinental, Universidad del Pacífico, Universidad Técnica de Marketing y Desarrollo, Universidad Autónoma San Sebastián, Universidad Columbia Del Paraguay, Centro Evangelico Menonita de Teología Asunción (CEMTA), headquarters of the Universidad Evangélica del Paraguay, Universidad Privada San Lorenzo (UNISAL), Polytechnic and Artistic University of Paraguay and Gran Asunción University.

Sports

The most popular sport in the city is football, just like the rest of Paraguay. The main team in the city is Club Sportivo San Lorenzo, who currently play in the Primera División.
