Wikipedia-wide information network

Hello.

I am Anthere. I only speak french and english. I hope someone will be able to translate this, and I apologise if I did not put it in the right place :-)

I would like that information circulate better between wikipedias, so that all wikipedians can participate more, and keep its own identity at the same time.

For this reason, I recently set a page on meta, m: Goings-on.

Hopefull, at any time, this page could indicate the current discussions, polls, votes or general announcements. 3 pages were already locally created on the spanish, the french, on the bulgarian and the english wikipedia. A global one is now on meta.

Each local page is about general on-goings as well as local ones.
Meta page aims at being about global occurences.

The page is different from the announcement page. The announcement is more oriented toward external communication (such as number of pages, special adverstisement), while the on-goings aim at mentionning community events (such as a new feature poll, elections of board of trustees).

To compare both pages :

It would be great that each wikipedia in time, set a similar page, so that information could flow more easily between wikipedia. If you do so, please do set the goings-on page locally, so that every wikipedians on *your* wikipedia can see it and participate to it, and please link it to the meta page.

For bigger wikipedia, it is also interesting to set a goings-on page to relieve the local village pump, often clogged with information request.

For small wikipedias, since it is difficult to maintain such a community page with less contributors, it makes sense to merge the goings-on in the village pump, or in the community main page (perhaps by making a separate paragraph).

I am also looking for people who would agree to update the local goings-on in their language. Please, contact me at my talk page for any support, suggestion and feedback.

Thank you very much for your attention :-) Anthere

hm! On the copyright-discussion page of our (German) Wikipedia, a user refered to the picture in your article about Jennifer Lopez. The picture is deep-linked and I think copyrighted. Due to the fact that I cannot speak swedish I don't know anything about your copyright-policy, but I suppose that copyrighted material is also not allowed in your Wikipedia, is it? Bikini

Hello! I noticed (how could I miss!) that there is a picture of woman in bikini on Bild:BikiniIos.jpg. The titles under the picture say:

  • "Bikini Ios från slovenska Lisca." and
  • "Kvinna iklädd modern bikini."

We would like to reuse the same picture on Slovene Wikipedia (cf. sl:bikini), but I'm not sure what those two messages mean. I guessed somehow that it could mean "bikini model Ios from Slovenian (company) Lisca". If so, are you sure that the picture is indeed under GFDL? Could you, please, translate this for me? --Romanm 5 mars 2005 kl.22.14 (CET)

I think Ios is the model of the bikini and Lisca is the manufacturer. "Bikini Ios från slovenska Lisca." would be "Bikini Ios from Slovenian Lisca.". The other sentence translates to "Woman dressed in modern bikini." erif 5 mars 2005 kl.22.30 (CET)
Thanks for the translation! What about the license? Can we rest asured that Användare:LouiseR is the author of the photography and that Bild:BikiniIos.jpg is indeed under GFDL? --Romanm 5 mars 2005 kl.23.54 (CET)

Ivan Gašparovič

Slovakia's president is Ivan Gašparovič. The Swedish Wikipedia has an article Ivan Gašparovic. The inclusion of the letter s with caron in the title is very problematic, as this character is not part of the ISO 8859-1 character set the Swedish Wikipedia purports to use. S with caron however is part of the Microsoft codepage 1252 extension, which means that some browsers will handle it in this context. Creating an interwiki link that points to this title is impossible. I urgently suggest moving the article to Ivan Gasparovic until the Swedish Wikipedia is converted to UTF-8. —213.23.58.216 25 mars 2005 kl.18.48 (CET) (en:User:Naddy)

Hi,

on Czech and English Wikipedias is ongoing discussion if this is real or some urban myth. Search in Google usualy leads to Wikipedia & copies and blogs. Can you please try to verify it with local sources? Thanks. --Wikimol 21 juni 2005 kl.23.50 (CEST)

It was quite well-covered in Swedish media at that time, so I'm quite sure it isn't any urban myth. However, if you wan't to investigate further you can use the e-mail to the court: lansrattenihalland@dom.se Gunnar Larsson 14 juli 2005 kl.01.03 (CEST)

Wikizine

Hi, I am w:nl:gebruiker:Walter of the dutch Wikipedia. I am writing you because your are listed as ambassador of your wiki. I have something to say that I think you will find useful and possibly others of your wiki also.

You know it is not easy for the members of a local wiki to be informed about what is going on in the higher levels of the Wikimedia family. This because of the language problem and the high level of fragmentation of places where you can find information.

I am now making a weekly news letter (Wikizine) that attempts to provide the news of the Wikimedia projects. The concept is to list only a very short description of the news an give the relevant url to the subject. I want it to be short, only give the news that is important for all projects. The target audience include the ambassadors. It is for people who are interested in what it going on outside there own wiki. I emphasize on the news that is practical-technical. The information comes form several "news"-pages on several wikis, the mailinglists and IRC. There will be news I can not discover. If you have news found somewhere or from you own wiki please let my know. wikizine AT wikipedia.be

I can only create one version in something that supposed to be English. I count on the readers to inform there local wiki about the news in there own language.

Wikizine is send by use of the mailinglist Announce-l. It is only used for this. So people can subscribe without being swamped by emails like the lists.

http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/announce-l

I hope that you and others of your wiki will subscribe to Wikizine and give feedback. So that Wikizine can become really a source where Wikimedians can find out what is going on. Greetings, w:nl:gebruiker:Walter PS: do not repond here. I will not see it.

Let me then just repeat some of content in English to ease the pain of helping a wiki fellow from another country: There are some differences in the article Inge den äldre in the contrast to the similar English one, or there are errors in or both of them. Is Inge's wife russian or is she the sister of Blot-Sven? --Finn Bjorklid 23 juni 2006 kl.18.54 (CEST)
/Fenix 23 juni 2006 kl.19.58 (CEST)

Lägga i museet?

/Fenix 27 juli 2007 kl. 17.45 (CEST)[svara]

Hebrew wikipedia

Hi, the Hebrew wikipedia is becoming more freindly, But we need your help! Would you be kind and translate the following into swedish?:

"Hebrew is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken by more than six million people in Israel and by an unknown number of people in Jewish and Israeli communities around the world. In Israel, it is the de facto language of the state and the people, as well as being one of the two official languages (together with Arabic), and it is spoken by the majority of the population.

Modern Hebrew is written from right to left using the Hebrew alphabet, and it is the language of the Bible.

The Hebrew Wikipedia is the Hebrew edition of Wikipedia. This edition began in July 2003 and has over 67,000 articles as of 17 December 2007. If you have any announcements or questions regarding international issues or the Hebrew Wikipedia, you are invited to consult the embassy of the Hebrew-speaking Wikipedia here"

""X is the 21th letter of the Hebrew alphabet and first letter in the word Shvedit - Svenska"

This is what it will look like: [2]

Thanks and cheers,

// habj 4 mars 2008 kl. 13.36 (CET)[svara]

Translation help request

The Wikimedia Foundation is preparing to launch a survey that it hopes will be helpful in discussing the future of how projects are funded on Wikipedia and sister sites. (More information about this can be read at meta:Fundraising and Funds Dissemination/Resource list and meta:Fundraising and Funds Dissemination/Recommendations, but you don't need to read it to help out here. :)) We would like input from as many people as possible, but the survey translations are not yet completed in many languages, including yours. The English version of the survey is at meta:Survey of how money should be spent/Questions/en. The Swedish version, currently 18% complete, is at meta:Survey of how money should be spent/Questions/sv. If you can help, you would be very welcome!

Translations are done using the "translation tool". If you go to this special page, all you have to do is select your language from the pull-down menu, alphabetical by language code, and click "fetch". It will bring up a table. You can easily see what has been translated and what has not, because untranslated sections are green. Click on the blue text in the left column next to content that has not been translated to open up an editing box. Above the box, the English version is shown, and you can simply enter in your language translation beneath it.

The survey is pretty short, so I hope we can get it completed in time to send it to Swedish-speaking editors in their own language. Thanks for any help you can offer! --Mdennis (WMF) (diskussion) 5 mars 2012 kl. 18.02 (CET)[svara]

The 100 best crime novels of all time

(engelska) I have been working on a Swedish version of a British list of detective novels.
Could you help me by suggesting a Swedish title for the page?
Thank you, Varlaam (disk) 17 augusti 2013 kl. 03.43 (CEST)[svara]

Millennium-serien 138.227.189.8 19 augusti 2013 kl. 06.33 (CEST)[svara]
Yes, I agree that that is a very good Swedish series.
But I asked my question poorly.
How do I say "The 100 best crime novels of all time" in Swedish?
"100 bäste polis böcker ..."??
Thanks, Varlaam (disk) 19 augusti 2013 kl. 07.12 (CEST)[svara]
A translation could be "De 100 bästa deckarna genom alla tider" or "Alla tiders 100 bästa deckare".
But I don't understand what you are doing. Are you going to translate an article to the swedish wikipedia? Who is doing the selection of books? It can hardly be done objectively. // jorchr 19 augusti 2013 kl. 07.34 (CEST)[svara]

Please make your question more specifik. Are you working with a Swedish translation of a list comprising British detective novels? Or are you working with a Swedish translation of a list (made in Great Britain?) of detective novels from all the world, written on any language? --Xauxa (disk) 19 augusti 2013 kl. 12.40 (CEST)[svara]

I wrote this Swedish page:
Århundradets 100 böcker enligt Le Monde
... and I "translated" that book list into 50 languages, including Russian, Korean, and Armenian.
By "translated", I mean I compiled the information that existed in ruwiki, kowiki, and hywiki.
I am now working on a different book list: simple:The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time,
and I am translating it into French (done), Spanish (done), Swedish (ready), Bokmal (ready), German, Russian, Dutch, Polish, Finnish, Italian, Portuguese, and Catalan.
"De 100 bästa deckarna genom alla tider" or "Alla tiders 100 bästa deckare"
Those are both good translations.
In the same way that my earlier list was called:
"enligt Le Monde"
... this new list is:
"enligt the CWA", the Crime Writers' Association, from Britain.
The CWA awards the Dagger-priserna every year.
In Toronto, Varlaam (disk) 19 augusti 2013 kl. 17.03 (CEST)[svara]
At this point, I would like to create the page.
Then everyone can look at it, and make a final decision about what the title should be.
How does that sound?
De 100 bästa deckarna genom alla tider
One complication:
I am working on the British list, because I emailed the CWA in England.
There is also an American list, an American answer to the British list.
I have not spoken to the Americans, and I have not translated the American list.
In English, the British list is "100 Crime Novels". The US list is "100 Mystery Novels".
Does svensk have 2 synonyms which can be used, if someone translates the 2nd list?
Varlaam (disk) 19 augusti 2013 kl. 17.23 (CEST)[svara]
The British created their list in 1990.
When I was talking to England, I said, it is almost 25 years since that list. Is it time to make a new list?
When I said that, I was thinking specifically of Henning Mankell, Millennium, books like that.
If the British made a list today, I think there would now be some Swedish books on the list.
Back in the 1970s, the only "Swedish" mystery we had here was the movie The Laughing Policeman with Walter Matthau, with the story moved from Sweden to the US.
Varlaam (disk) 19 augusti 2013 kl. 17.44 (CEST)[svara]
The titel De 100 bästa deckarna genom alla tider seems good to me. The problem is - as mentioned above - the selection, and the sources. Different sources may have different choises on which books that qualifie. It is not a matter of some selection made by you or me. --Xauxa (disk) 20 augusti 2013 kl. 16.21 (CEST)[svara]

Their website @LPfi: --Trade (diskussion) 6 november 2020 kl. 12.40 (CET)[svara]
@Trade: Thank you. I'd prefer an external source, but their overview page gives some history and mentions both names. I'll use that. However, the page is not very clear about whether the two are the same organisation, although reorganized under new legislation (already 2013?), or a new organisation taking over the responsibilities of the old one.
I am a bit puzzled over the new name. I don't see how "Geimmul Gwalli-Wiwonhoe" corresponds to "Game Rating and Administration Committee", there seems to be a word left out. As we prefer the official name (in this case in Korean; with appropriate redirects) over a name in an unrelated language (English), I'd like to be able to translate the Korean name to Swedish. Can you give a word-by-word translation (to English or Danish)?
As you seem to be Danish-speaking, you could perhaps check the article, perhaps tomorrow, when I have made the changes. Although your Babel box says sv=0, I suppose you can understand some of it.

Know a native Korean-speaker we can ping?--Trade (diskussion) 6 november 2020 kl. 13.18 (CET)[svara]
Ah! For some reason I thought you knew Korean. I checked the Babel category, but those of ko-3...-N either had sv-0 or have had no contributions for a decade. Aephon, Ninahi8, Mojoheartbeat, Mssetiadi, T00b87, Tomgkh, 위키에디터 and 토호대한 seem to have some level of sv and ko and have contributed here, some recently, some more long ago. –LPfi (diskussion) 6 november 2020 kl. 14.18 (CET)[svara]
Hi! Looking into the word, it is in fact true that the word "rating" is nowhere in it, while the word "게임물" might be better translated as "gaming" (corrections from fellow Korean-speaking users would be precious). What I can come up with is "Spels administrationsutskott", but of course feel free to suggest more technical names, that field is still a mistery for my Swedish. What's important to note here is that I don't believe we're talking about a "Gaming and administration committee", but rather about a "Gaming administration committee" (...if that makes any sense to you, as this is not exactly my usual field of interest, the obvious might well escape me).Ninahi8 (diskussion) 6 november 2020 kl. 15.20 (CET)[svara]
@Ninahi8: I have now amended the article and moved it to Geimmul Gwalli-Wiwonhoe. This isn't my "usual field of interest" either, and I cannot even read the Korean letters, so your comment was very helpful. I hope I did not make any bigger mistakes in amending the article. There would of course be a lot to add, but that I will probably leave to others. –LPfi (diskussion) 6 november 2020 kl. 21.51 (CET)[svara]
