Context of TechEssentials comment
I was asked to provide context on the issue here. user:Sophie was indefinitely blocked by ArbCom, and while I do know the reason why, the most I am allowed to say is that there were irregularities and that it involved a checkuser being run. When Sophie was blocked she went to the IRC, where she had been active before the block, looking for help. A number of users, including myself, four Wikipedians that are also part of TechEssentials, and one other user, responded. As I got more information and realized what Sophie was doing, I subsequently ceased offering aid to Sophie. During the time that I was still attempting to assist Sophie, however, I witnessed a number of disturbing comments and actions taken by the TechEssentials users, culminating with a heavily doctored IRC log, created with the intention of defaming an Arbitrator involved in the case, being sent to me via email. While the doctoring was most likely done by Sophie, the conversation it was taken from happened at the prompting of the TechEssentials members, and the TechEssentials members continued to treat it as fact for some time after I pointed out that it was forged.
Dusti was not involved in the Sophie incident, however he was, at some point after the incident, made aware of the details. He claims that he personally blocked Sophie from the TechEssentials domains, which is probably a good idea. I am more concerned, however, with the fact that he continues to be a part of the TechEssentials group. If he knows the details of the incident, which he indicated to me that he did, he must know about the decisions and actions taken by the rest the group. It is because he is still involved with the group that I cast the neutral vote, and considered casting an oppose vote. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and all of this would have been made clearer if I was able to share more details of the Sophie incident, however I cannot do so. I also do not log IRC conversations. The only thing I have remaining from the incident is the email, and I will not share the email with anyone except ArbCom (and only if they ask), as it contains sensitive personal information. - Correct me if I've misunderstood, but isn't that a bit like opposing a Wikipedian on another website because Wikipedia has lots of vandals? If it matters, I have second-hand knowledge of the details of what you call "the Sophie incident". HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:13, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
- My thoughts are similar. If we should stop using sites because of the poor conduct of some users, I should have stopped using Wikipedia long ago. Swarm X 12:18, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'll admit to being the "one other user" who was not from TechEssentials. And I strongly agree that a highly disturbing thing was mentioned after around 10 minutes, which resulted in my immediate departure from the channel. I will not repeat what was said, and like Sven, I do not log IRC communications (I was using freenode's webchat anyway). Reaper Eternal (talk) 13:42, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
- I'll note here that Reaper Eternal is not the one other user I was specifically talking about, the other user I was specifically talking about was involved for days, not minutes. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:43, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
- It's just another reason IRC is bad for Wikipedia.
I respect Sven for not opposing based on this. Those who opposed per Sven, not so much.Swarm X 18:58, 16 March 2011 (UTC)- My view and response to Swarm is this. Dusti's position at TechEssentials is about the same as a vice president would be in a corporation. If a vice president found out that the CEO and the other Vice Presidents in his corporation were engaged in highly unethical activities, continuing to remain in a leadership position in that corporation would raise a rather major judgment issue, and possibly an ethical one. Dusti himself did nothing wrong, but he is still a leader at TechEssentials. Were Dusti just one of 500 contributors to a site where others committed vandalism, I wouldn't mind. Indeed, I know of at least one Wikipedia admin who hangs out at /b/, and I don't mind one way or the other. It's that Dusti shares leadership positions with the people from the Sophie incident that bothers me. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:43, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
- Really? Well, in that case, point well taken and I stand corrected. I was under the impression that the user just happened to be an "average" member of this web site (which I'm totally unfamiliar with). If the situation is as you say, then your comment is totally justifiable. I was regrettably unclear on the details; I would certainly consider opposing based on that (though there wasn't lack of a better reason to do so). Regards, Swarm X 00:55, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Previous attempts box
I was about to add the "Previous attempts" box, but it appears that there were previous attempts at other usernames... Not sure what should be done here, was wondering if someone more experienced might have a look? WormTT 11:17, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
