Bot processing of template parameters

Five years ago when JJMC89 was extending his excellent bot to process CFDW, there was an inconclusive discussion about also updating parameters within templates.

At that time, JJMC89 offered: "For cases where the category name is placed in a template parameter, this is easy. How do we want to cover this?

  1. Replace the category name in any parameter of any template
  2. Replace the category name in any parameter of whitelisted templates
  3. Replace the category name in whitelisted parameters of whitelisted templates
  4. Replace the category name in any parameter of non-blacklisted templates"

Options 1 and 4 could lead to unpredictable outcomes not being detected promptly. For example, I would want to check the results of updating {{Fooian fooers}} before saving.

As for options 2 and 3, Black Falcon was afraid that a whitelist would be too cumbersome, but I would like at least the following to be added to the current bot actions for renamings:

There will always be manual follow up required for some CFDs, but these seem fair requests for a bot to handle, particularly if we're only expecting them to be edited on pages that are current members of a category being renamed.

JJMC89 notes that this would be option #3 on his above list, but TBH I think we could safely simplify that to #2.

I think either 2 or 3 would be good. I think we should call it something other than whitelist (e.g. allowlist?) per phab:T254646 and related efforts. Would this be on-wiki? @JJMC89: as requested, options 2 or 3 now have explicit support from the current regulars. Did you envisage a list editable by admins on a new protected subpage, e.g. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Bot template list (or a section of WP:CFDW?), or managed by yourself within the bot code following requests on this page? – Fayenatic London 21:06, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The new code has been running for a bit. I don't seem to have broken anything, but I haven't seen cases where it has updated a template yet. Brief docs added to User:JJMC89 bot III/tasks/CFDW. FM-Class pages, etc

I am posting here to formally oppose all future changes of articles to pages categories. Quite simply they can't be done easily. They are populated by convoluted templates and modules that are near impossible to change for individual categories, the proponents are not making the changes themselves and they're just clogging up the bot. These should not be listed for the bot to work on. As noted on WP:CFD/W: If the category needs to be split among multiple destination categories, requires template editing, or requires editing the documentation subpage of templates, or any other special circumstances that require manual review, list it at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Manual rather than here. This is because the bot cannot recategorize the pages and will just waste time trying to, preventing other things from being processed. FYI, blocking the bot doesn't help move things along. Instead leave me a message on my talk page after the instructions have been removed from CFD/W so I can kill the task, allowing it to restart earlier. — JJMC89 (T·C) 01:40, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Timrollpickering please could you revert your change to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Large? The reason is that these pages will not move until the categories are moved. This is due to transition code in the module (suggested by @HouseBlaster) to reduce disruption, that checks for the existence of categories before using them — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:23, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Per the bot's owner above, it's best to wait for the categories to depopulate first and they're doing so even without the categories having been moved over. Category:File-Class Album articles has 145,677 pages in it as I type. Clogging the bot at this stage will not achieve anything. Timrollpickering (talk) 19:47, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If all of the relevant template/modules are updated, I can do a special bot run to move all of the categories listed at WP:CFD/W/M#Other under Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 December 7 without trying to recategorize the pages in them.
