- File:Flavius Arrianus.JPG (delete | talk | history | logs).
- A grainy image of unknown provenance which has been taken from [1]. This image is currently unused on Wikipedia (although there is a derivative of it on commons [2], also nominated for deletion), and it's highly doubtful that it is a bust of Arrian anyway. Pasicles (talk) 13:20, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the notification. The image has been used, I think from 2008, for the Arrian page. It is not "unused". It has been used also, I think from 2004, on our website http://www.fernhill.com/about-deerhounds/arrianus-de-lange-jacht-en-lurecoursing-dutch/ Provenance is good - it is certainly not "highly doubtful" - James H. Oliver. American Journal of Archaeology, Vol. 76, No. 3 (Jul., 1972), pp. 327-328 "Herm at Athens with Portraits of Xenophon and Arrian." Please keep it as is. --Richard Hawkins (talk) 00:34, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete The above comment suggests that the image was taken from a book published in 1972. In that case, the photo is most likely copyrighted, so we need permission from the copyright holder. --Stefan2 (talk) 15:23, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright of the image, from the journal article mentioned above <<H. Oliver. American Journal of Archaeology, Vol. 76, No. 3 (Jul., 1972), pp. 327-328 "Herm at Athens with Portraits of Xenophon and Arrian.">> was given for the book http://www.fernhill.com/about-deerhounds/arrianus-de-lange-jacht-en-lurecoursing-dutch/, that is why it has been used for the Wikipedia Arrian page. --Richard Hawkins (talk) 00:04, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The copyright expires 95 years after publication. If the photo was published for the first time in 1972, then the photo can't be used on Wikipedia until 1 January 2068. --Stefan2 (talk) 00:09, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- They don't have to be used exclusively on Wikipedia, but it should be possible to prove that the uploader has permission to upload an image here. See WP:IOWN. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:52, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Stated to be Open Government license, but I recall The Security Service (MI5) might have an exemption. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:30, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The MI5 website has been changed. Here is the link to the new location https://www.mi5.gov.uk/home/bottom-nav-items-holding/terms-and-conditions.html where anyone can plainly see that it states: "The material is available for anyone to use, reuse, copy, adapt, modify, publish, distribute, transmit or exploit, subject only to a few restrictions under the terms of the Open Government Licence for public sector information."

- "Posted to Panoramio by Sarnya" but I can't find this image anywhere else on the Internet using Google Images. Presumably, it has been removed from Panoramio, but it would have helped to have a URL. There is currently no way to verify that the licence claim is valid. - Italian Wikipedia doesn't tell where the image comes from, so it isn't possible to check if the {{PD-Italy}} claim is correct. This is only in the public domain in Italy if taken at least 20 years ago, and it is only in the public domain in the United States if taken before 1976 and published before 1989 without a copyright notice. Neither year of publication nor year of creation can be verified with the information available. Stefan2 (talk) 23:28, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
