Wikipedia:Main page editor

Main page editor is a user group that allows highly trusted users to edit content on the main page.

Permissions

The Main-page-editor group gives access to editprotected and protect user rights, which allows editors to edit pages transcluded onto the main page through full and cascading protection, as well as the ability to activate two-factor authentication (oathauth-enable).

Appropriate use

Main page editors may use their userrights for one or more of the following activities, in compliance with content policy and main-page specific guidelines:

Inappropriate use

Main page editors who use their rights to perform actions not covered by this policy may have their rights removed. Main page editors are forbidden from using main page editor permissions for any actions unrelated to updating and maintaining main page content, including:

  • Protecting, unprotecting, or changing protection level of pages including by transcluding them onto cascade-protected pages.[a]
  • Moving fully move-protected pages.
  • Editing through protection on fully-protected pages other than the components of the main page.

Main page editors are also forbidden from using their rights to engage in behavior that would be prohibited in other areas of Wikipedia, including editing in violation of sanctions or topic/interaction bans, and edit warring over content on the main page.

Granting the right

The rights associated with this usergroup are extremely sensitive. Access to them should only be granted to those editors who demonstrate a clear need for access to it, and who have an established track record of positive contributions.

The Main-page-editor group may be granted by any uninvolved administrator to any editor following a successful request at Wikipedia Talk:Main page editor.

Any user who previously held main page editor rights, and had them removed solely for inactivity, may have their rights restored to them via request at Wikipedia Talk:Main page editor; if after a period of 24 hours no valid concerns are raised, any uninvolved administrator may restore the group membership.

Any administrator in good standing may be granted access to these rights upon relinquishing their administrator access.

The absence of recent work on main page content, as described in the "Requirements for Granting" section of this page, is explicitly considered a valid concern with respect to granting or reinstating membership in this usergroup.

Process for requesting

  1. In a new section, make a request at Wikipedia Talk:Main page editor.
  2. The discussion will be open at least 7 days, after which it will be closed by an uninvolved administrator, who will grant the right if there is consensus that the editor will use the main page editor rights within policy.

Requirements for granting

Must meet all these criteria:

  1. Demonstrated need for access, which may be through significant work at any one or more of the following:
    a) Scheduling Today's Featured Article;
    b) Examining candidates for posting to In The News;
    c) Working on prep sets at Did You Know;
    d) Working on On This Day entries;
    e) Working on Today's Featured Picture;
    f) Scheduling Today's Featured List;
    g) Working to fix mistakes on the main page at WP:ERRORS
  2. A thorough understanding of policy and procedure at the Main page project(s) at which they intend to work.
  3. A thorough understanding of Wikipedia's content-related policies, and in particular our policies related to neutrality, verifiability, original research, and content about living people.
  4. Sufficient ability with the English language to edit the main page without introducing errors.
  5. Sufficient understanding of Wikipedia's behavioral expectations of editors to collaboratively edit the main page.

Requirements for retaining

Users must at all times have made edits to the Main page or its various section work/talk pages within the last year to retain their group membership.

Process for removing right

Self-requested removal

For inactivity

  • Any uninvolved administrator may remove the group from any user who does not meet the activity requirement.

In an emergency

  • In response to actual disruption caused by an editor using this access, any administrator may remove the group at their discretion without prior notification. The administrator must then open a discussion for removal of this group, as described in sub-section Via discussion below.

Via discussion

  • If the situation is not urgent, any user in good standing may make a request at Wikipedia:Administrators' Noticeboard for the group to be removed from any editor who is at the time a main page editor. The user in question must be notified about the discussion on their talk page. This discussion will remain open for at least 7 days after the user was notified, after which an uninvolved administrator will close the discussion, and remove the group membership unless there is consensus that the editor will use the main page editor rights within policy. Such a discussion may also be initiated for any editor who does not currently hold main page editor rights, but who has previously held such rights, and would be eligible to receive them again upon request, subject to activity requirements.

Notes

  1. ^ Transclusion of templates that are necessary for appropriately formatting the main page is an exception to this rule.
