- File:Amazing Race 18 - Mallory in Kolkata.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Ryulong ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Image does not meet criteria #8 of the NFCC, our understanding of the show is not hurt at all by not having the image. Furthermore, since every other leg has a free image, there's no validity to the claim that no free image could be found for this leg. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:48, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep: It does meet criteria 8. There is no free alternative to this image that depicts an event that happened. There is no feasible way to recreate this photo in a free manner. It just seems that Sven is arguing that no fair use images should be used on these pages when other free images are used instead.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:31, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete: Obviously fails WP:NFCC#8 because its omission is not detrimental to the understanding that one participant on The Amazing Race show had to drink tea. -- ТимофейЛееСуда. 21:03, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- So does describing the challenge. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:55, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- So it is then accompanying descriptive text and therefore qualifies for WP:NFCC.—Ryulong (竜龙) 04:53, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- What on earth makes you think "accompanying descriptive text" is a sufficient criterion for NFCC? It is usually a necessary criterion, but not a sufficient one. If the accompanying text is understandable without the image, you still get a failure. Fut.Perf. ☼ 05:51, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Well what the hell is a valid alternative then? A photo of Kolkata Town Hall saying "They drank a lot of tea here"? I couldn't find any photos of the fountain that was visited so that's out of the question, too. Out of any of the non-free photos I uploaded for these articles, this one gives the most information and removing it clearly detracts from the page.—Ryulong (竜龙) 07:55, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Delete, obvious NFCC#8 failure. Could easily be covered by text alone. Fut.Perf. ☼ 05:51, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- There's no replacement and its omission most definitely would detract from the page. Doesn't that mean it passes NFCC#8?—Ryulong (竜龙) 07:58, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete The event is sufficiently described in text. The image doesn't add any information. Thus, fails WP:NFCC#8. --Stefan2 (talk) 12:01, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete The image depicted in the event is described in text. You don't have to show a person drinking tea at the event to say they had to drink tea. We get that. This particular image is not noted in secondary sources, and even the source doesn't say anything about drinking tea. If this image is legitimate, then why are there no non-free images of them doing Hindu art? How about them picking up bundles of books? How about them getting into a rickshaw bus? How about them searching the grounds of the school? These events are no less significant than the tea drinking. This fails WP:NFCC #1 and #8, and both blatantly so. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:13, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- This argument does not make sense. While that particular moment (Mallory Ervin performing the task) is not explicitly stated as something important, episode recaps do mention it happened (the photo gallery from this episode appears to have been taken down in favor of the show's later seasons). If this image is not valid, I would still like to find one to be its suitable replacement, which no one has put forward yet.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:11, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If the tea image is important, why is it important and screenshots from plenty of other elements of the episode (and mentioned in in recap) are not? Just because something happened isn't reason enough to include a non-free image of it. Do you have any secondary sources to suggest the tea drinking moment was somehow significant beyond that of any other aspect of that episode? --Hammersoft (talk) 19:16, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- That summary should show it was instrumental in the elimination of another team. Namely
But I assume this is still a primary source, so there's this article, this article, this article, this article, etc. While I cannot access the photo gallery (yet), I believe I chose the photo of Mallory because she's someone of note.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:27, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Oh wait, I got into the old photo gallery.—Ryulong (竜龙) 19:29, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Why is the image of her drinking tea more important than any other image from the episode? Why is the image imperative to inform the reader that she drink tea where text alone can't convey she drank tea? --Hammersoft (talk) 19:47, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- It was one I chose because we also happen to have an article on her. The promotional photos either come from the tea drinking task or the episode's finish line where they are drinking Snapple. The tea drinking event took up most of the time of the episode, as it happened the show is sponsored by a brand of tea.—Ryulong (竜龙) 20:18, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- So it's effectively random that the tea picture is in there. Any objection to me adding say, 8-10 screenshots from the episode to that section? --Hammersoft (talk) 20:33, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Mallory has an article on her and it is the best photo from the set that displays the event. It shows someone actively participating in the event. I have provided sources that state the event was a major part of the episode. What else is necessary? Is your issue simply the idea that absolutely no fair use images should be allowed on Wikipedia? Because it seems that you are going strawman on me here.—Ryulong (竜龙) 22:12, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Why is the image of her drinking tea more important than any other image from the episode? Why is the image imperative to inform the reader that she drink tea where text alone can't convey she drank tea? --Hammersoft (talk) 19:47, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- That summary should show it was instrumental in the elimination of another team. Namely
- "Best photo of the event", "chosen because we also happen to have an article on her", "tea drinking event took up most of the time of the episode", and more. All of this has nothing to do with secondary sources supporting the image's inclusion. I ask again, why is the image imperative to inform the reader that she drink tea where text alone can't convey she drank tea? --Hammersoft (talk) 00:20, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I guess there's nothing that says this particular photo is any more important than the other ones taken during the show. Is that therefore a reason we should not be using it nor any other fair use photos that might be used from the episode? Because from my point of view you seem to be arguing that no non-free image should be used from the show in any situation.—Ryulong (竜龙) 00:25, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- If there were a photo that were particularly famous as reported in secondary sources, then inclusion would be warranted. Otherwise, I fail to see how a photo of a cast member drinking tea is any more information than the prose saying she drank tea. --Hammersoft (talk) 01:48, 15 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Delete, per Sven and Timofey, and also because it obviously fails its stated purpose of "identifying the teams". How could it do that when it's so small and blurry none of the people in the picture is even recognizable? The information value of this image is exactly equal to the sentence: "Some people were standing around on some lawn". If you find this information is crucial for the article, then by all means put that sentence into the article. If you feel it's rather trivial, then don't. Fut.Perf. ☼ 05:57, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- File:Americans Killed in Ramadi June 2004.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Palm dogg ( | contribs | uploads | upload log).
Non-free photograph showing two dead American soldiers in Iraq, uploaded with the argument that it provides a rare picture of the war from the opposing (Iraqi insurgent) perspective. I'm not going to comment on this image under a perspective of political sensitivities or reverence. Those considerations are beside the point. What matters is that it fails NFCC#8: we all know what uniformed bodies lying on the ground look like; we don't need an image to understand that. Fut.Perf. ☼ 21:27, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- OK, I need some guidance here, because I also had another image, File:NickBergandFiveMen.JPG, removed from my article for the same reason.
I had argued that both these images were PD in the US, because of a lack of a copyright treaty with Iraq;further, I argued that their copyrights were blocked under IEEPA sanctions.Just to make things clearer, I've removed the IEEPA fair use tag and am arguing that both images are straight PD in the US.Furthermore, I will argue that "Americans Killed in Ramadi June 2004.jpg" is significant to the understanding of the topic of the Iraq War in Anbar Province, first because it is one of the few insurgent pictures that I can directly tie to a specific time and location in Anbar; second, because this was a very violent event with over 10,000 Iraqis and Americans killed, yet there are few actual pictures of the violence. I'm also glad you tagged this image, because I wanted to get a ruling on it before I put it up. The original caption claims it is "a frame from a videotape, which was delivered to Associated Press Television News". Reuters and several other TV stations received similar ones. Would APTN hold a copyright on it, or would the copyright belong to the individual who created it? Thanks! Palm_Dogg (talk) 21:57, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]- See the discussion at WT:C which was closed recently. - Keep per WP:NPOV, WP:NOTCENSORED and WP:NFCC#8, the images are significant in a way that a generic dead body wouldn't be. It's true that of deceased American soldiers are hard to get from media, and for that reason this image has historical significance. Given that this incident is discussed in text by reliable sourcse and those images are rare to find, this image significantly improves the reader's understanding of the described scene. Diego (talk) 22:44, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- How so? After reading the text alone, I understand perfectly well that there were dead bodies of American soldiers lying on the ground. After seeing the image, I still know exactly that, and nothing more. What concrete, significant information does the image convey that the text doesn't? And how on earth do you think "NPOV" or "NOTCENSORED" even factors into the issue? I explicitly did not base the nomination on the idea that the content was somehow offensive. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:54, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- And I'm also not defending on the basis that it's offensive. But your nomination is on the basis of NFCC#8, contextual significance, and to evaluate its significance the content guidelines are relevant; you can't say "I nominate only NFCC policy and other considerations are beside the point", because NFCC#8 includes a pointer to such other considerations that define what is significant to a topic. That this image would be censored in other media adds to its significance; but Wikipedia:NOTCENSORED states that "discussion of potentially objectionable content should not focus on its offensiveness but on whether it is appropriate to include in a given article", which is what we're doing here. Pertinence and encyclopedic nature of images define that appropriateness as being "significantly and directly related to the article's topic", which this image clearly is, and including images that "should look like what they are meant to illustrate", again exactly what we have with this one.
- How so? After reading the text alone, I understand perfectly well that there were dead bodies of American soldiers lying on the ground. Fut.Perf. ☼ 10:54, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The significance of images of deceased soldiers goes beyond the pure graphical information contained in them, as evidenced by the numerous incidents of killed soldiers and the treatment they receive from the press. Unless you're devoid of empathy and evaluate significance by pure information flows, you can't say that the significance of a corpse image is determined only by its visual display; society just doesn't work that way.
- Now that significance of this class of images is established in the abstract, the significance of this one in particular is because it's illustrating the specific event that is described in text as recounted by reliable sources. This usage is accepted throughout Wikipedia for other images, which further reinforces the notion that images like these have significance for the events they depict. But many of these images are freely licensed by the U.S. Army and can be included without restrictions, so depicting bodys of U.S. enemies is easy to do complying with NFCC, while images of U.S. dead soldiers will likely come from international press and thus be copyrighted; this creates an imbalance in coverage, a bias that must be avoided per the WP:NPOV pillar. Removing the image would be detrimental to understanding the article not only because it ceases to convey the emotional impact that such image represents for the event, but because it creates a biased coverage of the war throughout all related articles. Removing the image is hiding a significant POV, that of the opposite army, which is created because of the common censoring of images of some armies and not others in other media; we should strieve to include with equal coverage the availabe images of this nature that are confirmed to not suffer from media manipulation, to avoid selective reporting that is against policy and that is common in war conflicts.
