External links
Hi Yunshui, you've always been my 'go to guy' for general type queries so here I am back again! I removed an external link from An Account of Corsica [1] and also from James Boswell [2]. I hadn't been sure if I was doing the right thing and had given it some thought before deciding to remove them - my final reasoning was that they were already accessible via archive.org and I also had [slight] reservations about a COI due to the user name; however, the site doesn't appear to have advertising etc. I've received an email from the user and he says: " ... I can appreciate that you want to avoid duplicate links in Wikipedia, but I'd also like to point out that these two online versions of the same book are actually of two different editions (the 2nd. from 1768 and the 3rd. from 1769) and that there may well be textual differences between them. The formats of the two web versions are also very different, and different readers may prefer one or the other. For instance, the version at diquadeimonti.com contains a hypertext table of contents and three different resolutions of the map (up to 5274 * 3328 pixels), and may be considered more user-friendly by some readers. ... "
. Have I been a little harsh in removing the external link? I don't have a problem doing a self revert if I have, I just wondered what your thoughts were? SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:29, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Sagaciousphiil, nice to hear from you again. I think you were right on both counts, here: WP:ELPOINTS#3 states that "Links... should be kept to a minimum"; there is no need to provide links to multiple editions of a work. We aren't particularly interested in making assumptions about what readers may or may not find useful in an external link, nor which edition they might prefer - there is a link to a legally distributed copy of the work, and that's all we require. I'd therefore agree with your assessment; there is no need for the Diquadeimonti link, and adding it is in fact actively discouraged by our policy on external links. Yunshui 雲水 09:45, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you - very much appreciated (as always!). SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:52, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- OK, SagaciousPhil and Yunshui, I bow to your better judgement. It's Wikipedia's loss (albeit a very small one), not mine! Diquadeimonti (talk) 12:44, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

- I'd suggest removing the bit about apps unless you can source it to a reference that isn't a download site, and find a source for the first sentence. Other than that, it looks okay - so okay, in fact, that I've moved it to mainspace (you'd need an admin to do that anyway, since the title was protected). You can find it and continue working on it at Medindia. Good job! Yunshui 雲水 10:09, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

- Perhaps, but you can't force a horse to drink the water you've led them to; replying "I hate you all" to people who are trying to (more or less gently) help you doesn't bode well for receptiveness of further help... It's probably worth a shot, though. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 19:21, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

- Eeeehhhhhh I dunno about that. The thing is more that Yoshi needs to understand that they have an anger issue, and to use that understanding as the first step to tempering his temper. The unblock request itself is a good sign of that. To be honest, (and this is now generally speaking; Yoshi's outbursts aren't all that bad) I'm not sure that saying "this user has anger issues" would make people who have been lashed out at feel any better about it, and it could be taken as a scarlet letter, which IMO we really need to cut down on in all cases. If Yoshi has taken the first step towards bridling their anger, then that's hopefully enough. Just my take on it, though. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 19:33, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

- I'm only on a flying visit here so no time for an in depth review, but if another admin wants to take a chance on the guy then I'm cool with that. It would be nice to know what he thinks he did wrong, though; I blocked him for a laundry list of reasons, most of which his unblock request doesn't even mention. If you do decide to unblock, a recommendation of mentorship in some shape or form sounds like an extremely good idea. Cheers all, Yunshui 雲水 19:41, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- I declined his block, as you are right, he hasn't really addressed the other concerns. I asked him to think it over and then come back after reflecting some and maybe then we can accept it with an adopt-a-user clause. --AdmrBoltz 20:17, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Advertising
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertising Adding a productname to one of many incomplete wiki lists is not advertising. it's neutral referencing. can you see our CAD at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_computer-aided_design_editors ? I'm not gonna add it describing it as "the best CAD for AEC" (although it certainly is). Due to an ill-advised policy of wikipedia i will create a new username - but labeling our account as "advertising" is baseless prejudice. Just because someone smokes doesn't mean they are smoking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.209.180.8 (talk) 13:49, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
- User:MesserliInformatikAG, I presume? The fact that you appear to have created a single-purpose account with the primary intent of adding your products to various listing is concerning, but the fact that you appear to believe this to be in accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines is more concerning still. Your opinion on whether our policies are "ill-advised" or not is irrelevant - this is a private website, and if you want to edit here you will need to abide by its policies, whether you approve of them or not. Some further polices you will need to familiarise yourself with are WP:Source list (entries included in lists on Wikipedia must be based on reliable sources), COI (editors with a conflict of interest should not edit topics which pertain to that conflict of interest) and WP:NOTDIR (Wikipedia is not a business directory or catalogue). Request for assistance
Hello! I have a problem with an editor who keeps removing a legitimate template at Lajos Kossuth article. I've added Template:Refimprove because, as it can be easily seen, there are many paragraphs without any source. However, this editor removed it 4 times, without giving any valid reason (only "vandalism" and "rv vandalism'). The most confusing fact is that he added the same template at Avram Iancu article: [3], using my edit summary at Lajos Kossuth article ("many passages are unsourced"). 86.127.27.11 (talk) 09:05, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Given the range of IPs involved, the best I can do is to semi-protect the page - which does, of course, prevent you from editing it as well. I've done so; if you come up with any sources, please stick an
{{edit request}}
template on the talkpage and I'll add them for you. Yunshui 雲水 09:18, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for responding to helpme template
Thank you for responding to my queries. I want to clarify my queries a bit more.
By editing an image on commons I meant "Can I crop an image so as to get a closeup of the picture instead of downloading the image and croping it on my system and then re-uploading that picture.
My query about merging meant that sometimes back when I visited a museum, I created a page about the museum without thinking about the fact that the museum is a part of an organization that among other things host a museum. Now I would like to make a new page about the organisation Ghalib Academy and include the page Ghalib Museum, New Delhi as a subsection of that page.
Thank you as your answer about linking sub sections was more than satisfactory.
Anwaraj (talk) 10:46, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. Well, the answer's no as far as the picture is concerned, you'll need to upload a modified version. You've got a couple of options with the museum article; personally I'd retain it, add a couple of sentences about it in the Ghalib Academy article, and use
{{Main}}
to direct interested parties to the article about the museum. If that doesn't appeal, other solutions would be to move the existing page on the museum to the title "Ghalib Academy" and then add text about the Academy's other operations (this is the easiest way to remove the page about the museum without losing the page history), or copy the text of the museum article (it's all your own work, bar a few minor formatting changes, so there's no copyright concern to worry about) into the new article and request deletion of the museum page with{{db-g7}}
. You can also keep the existing page about the museum, but duplicate its text in the new article and add{{copied}}
to the new article's talkpage. Lots of choices... Yunshui 雲水 12:20, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank You. Will try to do as suggested. Anwaraj (talk) 12:37, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- BTW, Anwaraj, you can crop an image without uploading a cropped version. The syntax is a bit tricky, but you can do this with the help of {{Annotated image}}. See its documentation here for more details. E.g. the File:Bust of Mirza Ghalib.JPG can be cropped to give:
Wow! Was looking for something like this only. Can you please give me a link where I can find more like this... Thank You
Anwaraj (talk) 14:03, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- @Anwaraj: You are most welcome. BTW it is me, User:Wamiq, who wrote this, if you didn't know (as it seems from your edit summary here). And I'm sorry I didn't understand what you meant by "give me a link where I can find more like this"... —ШαмıQ✍ @ 14:17, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
- Good call Wamiq; I hadn't thought of using image templates within Wikipedia to get the effect he wanted. As to "more like this", I'd guess Category:Graphic templates would probably be the obvious place to start. Yunshui 雲水 15:15, 22 January 2014 (UTC)
RevDel
I was eavesdropping at ANI, and regarding the RevDel, this edit still contains the revdel'd username in the edit summary. Hello Yunshui,
Sorry If I am posting about the same thing again but I have some questions on this, first off I wish to have you as my trainer because you seem to be closest with my timezone and secondly I don't think you can as I have not reached 200 edits if you have any suggestions on what I could to get 200 so fast because I try to find pages to edit, infact I have edited one of Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai with quite alot of new information however not much else, any suggestions would be appreciated. MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 16:36, 28 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Mike. I'd certainly be happy to do some CVUA work with you, but you're right, you need to rack up your edit count a bit first. There are a few ways you can do this. The Contribution Team's backlogs list is a good place to start; it lists tons of pages which are tagged as needing attention. Deal with some of these and you can chalk up a whole bunch of mainspace edits. The Community Portal has a hefty to-do list, which might also give you some ideas. If anti-vandalism is your thing, you could try patrolling Recent changes; this is an excellent way to demonstrate that you can properly identify and fix vandalism (you might find it helpful to read through this essay first). Or just find a topic you're interested in and start working on it; good quality content is always welcome! Best of luck, and feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions. A brief history of my interactions with William
A brief history of my interactions with William
From memory, so please forgive if I don't get this exactly right.
- Some time ago, it came to my attention that William felt that there was a lot of admin abuse, and no one cared to do anything about it. I informed William that I took admin abuse seriously, and would look into allegations.
- Subsequently, William posted a few times to my talk page with allegations of abuse. I looked into them and unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) found them wanting.
- I tried to explain this to William. I haven't been contacted in some time. It would be speculation to guess why - one hopes it is because William no longer found any examples of abuse, although it is more likely he became convinced I wasn't supportive or eliminating abuse.
So I join the latest kerfuffle with a bit of history. I do not like overturning an admin block unless it is clearly wrong. IMO, this one is gray, and not warranted, but not so clearly out of bounds that it should be overturned immediately. My initial instincts (which must be good, because they matched yours) was to request that Orlady voluntarily remove the block. I made my request about the same time you did, although I was unaware of your request.
I'm frustrated that William is unwilling or unable to supply a cogent summary of the problem. I get dribs and drabs of it, and I am fairly certain William feels it should be obvious, but I feel like I am assembling a jigsaw puzzle, and wish he would lay out a clear timeline of what appended, and what was wrong. I think there's some umbrage at Nyttend for posts not made by Nyttend, but again, I see shadows. I do think the block is counter-productive, and hope we can sort this out, but it doesn't look encouraging.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:34, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- William agreed to my conditions for unblock, so the block should now be a moot issue.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:08, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- It's taken me far longer than I expected to get back to my computer this evening (and as it is, I'm only here briefly), so thank you for intervening. I see you've invested considerable time and effort explaining the situation, and your review of events seems to concur largely with mine. Kudos for stepping up and doing the necessary. - It appears that neither of you have actually reached the requisite edit count yet (it's 200+ edits to article mainspace, rather than 200+ edits in total), but I'm willing to make an exception to the guidelines: Mike's raring to go and will be fixing vandalism with or without guidance (so "with" would be preferable!), and in your case, the work you've done on your adoption school is evidence to me that you understand the basic workings of Wikipedia well enough. Hi Yunshui!
My name is Joe Tull and I am a member of Prof. Stuhl's History of Ecology course at Bucknell University. I am excited to join the Wikipedia community. I really appreciate that you are willing to assist our class as we focus on updating Wikipedia properly. I look forward to working with you again in the future as our class begins to make contributions to Wikipedia. Also, I actually have one quick question already if you would not mind answering. When I posted a response to Prof. Stuhl on my talk page, the text appeared in a box, but instead of starting a new line, the text just flowed out of the box in the same line and extended the page. It looks a bit ridiculous. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix this? Thanks again! Jjt022 (talk) 05:13, 4 February 2014 (UTC)Jjt022 Joe Tull
- Hi Joe. There's an easy fix for that run-on message - you'll have started the line with a leading space, which throws off the software:
I'm guessing you saw something like this?
- Instead of indenting by putting a space at the start of a new line, use a colon (or series of colons) instead - typing this:
:Some indented text
- will give you this:
- Some indented text.
- Hope that helps. You might find the markup cheatsheet handy if you run into any other formatting oddities like this. Yunshui 雲水 08:35, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

What to do with User_talk:121.218.97.41?
Hi Yunushi, you declined the Request for speedy deletion on User_talk:121.218.97.41 because it didnt matchthe criteria and I see that. However, this page seems not relevant anymore, as there is only one section from 2008 and the user which created it got banned meanwhile. Also this IP address hasn't been active since then. So what to do in such case? Regards, Frlgin (talk) 15:53, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- Basically: nothing. If the IP is reassigned and a new user starts editing through it, they are at liberty to ignore the message and blank the page. If the IP doesn't get used again, Wikipedia loses nothing by having an extant talkpage for it. It's simply not worth bothering with. Yunshui 雲水 15:56, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Adoption request
Hi I am looking for an experienced Wikipedia to adopt me. I have checked several profiles and i think you are cool. Thanks in advance for accepting me.
Regards Masssly (talk) 16:47, 2 February 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Masssly. Right at the moment I'm afraid I'm a bit cautious about taking on new adoptees, at least until I see how the classes I'm working with in the Wikipedia Education Program pan out. I suspect that they will require quite a considerable amount of my time, and I'm concerned that I won't be able to provide much support to an adoption program over the next couple of months. If you're happy to wait, or to work your way through my adoption school with only occasional input from me, then I'd be happy to oblige, but if you're after a more hands-on mentor in the immediate future then you might want to consider asking another adopter. Yunshui 雲水 08:54, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
- I could do with occasional input from you as I work my way through. I do not expect to consume too much of your time. Thank you.

Help needed
Hello, Yunshui. I am currently in a dispute with another user (one that is quite rude and prejudice). The two pages are: Latin Europe (disambiguation page) and Latin peoples (article). Basically the user either deletes content, or adds templates such as Citation Needed (to the disambiguation page) and Original research and Incoherent (to the article) after I restore the content, which is fine, but I need some time to find proper sources. There are at least two other contributors that help with these pages (though I am not sure how active they are) so I am the only one, currently, that edits these pages. I usually prefer editing articles regarding Anthropology and Felinology, (I am currently contributing to articles relating to the Sakha Republic and Yakut/Sakha peoples and culture). I am rather new to Wikipedia and I am still learning the policies, so I would greatly appreciate your help/guidance. Afro-Eurasian (talk) 22:16, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- I see Mark has edit-protected the two articles to give you guys a chance to discuss the issues. Personally I don't think I'm likely to be especially helpful - I simply don't have the time at present to wade through the page histories and sources. I'd recommend, though, that you try officially requesting a third opinion, since you'll then get help from a neutral editor with (probably) some experience in dispute resolution. Yunshui 雲水 08:51, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you, Yunshui. I have tried to communicate with the other user, but he is difficult to discuss with (his English is also not the best, so I also feel that perhaps he doesn't fully understand me). A second user noticed that as well, and believes that he is just being difficult for the sake of being difficult. Hopefully a third opinion will help, although currently, from my understanding, there is a clear consensus between two other users and me, making it three against one. I appreciate your time and for the reply. Afro-Eurasian (talk) 18:05, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Dear Yunshui, I greatly appreciate the work you do. It is my life's mission to be an artist that has illuminated in someway a person's life with a painting. It is very important to me to have a good name and to promote my work. Please, when you have a moment, could you go into specifics of what caused my page to be deleted so that I correct them or obtain the information to have the page restored.

- I deleted the Wikipedia page about you (NB. not "your" page, and most definitely not a place for you to promote your work) because it had been copied verbatim from another website. However, a decision had previously been made that you did not meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria, and it is the issues raised in that discussion which would need to be addressed before a page about you could be created. Reviewer and Rollbacking Rights
Hello Yunshui, I was wondering if you have any advice on when I can apply for such rights, I wish to acquire them because I feel the rollbacking rights would allow me to use tools which are more advanced for anti-vandal work and Reviewer rights would just ease the process for me also as I tend to view pages which require reviewers, MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 18:11, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- I would not advise applying for such rights at this time; see the email I've just sent you. Yunshui 雲水 19:21, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

User:Dontlike123
It's becoming more and more evident that Dontlike123 is either a troll if you are the type that always ABF or incompetent if you are the type that always AGF. Either way, I think the best way to deal with this is to just stop responding until the user decides to just answer the questions, if they refuse to do so, restricting talk page access and making them go through the ticketing system may be appropriate. Happy editing! — {{U|Technical 13}} (t • e • c) 21:32, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Good Morning
My article that you helped with is now cut down to 12 sentences with 21 citations. No idea if they're all acceptable on wiki. Someone in the Teahouse thought my statements needed even more backing.
On a personal note, I've been following London graffiti art for nearly 10 years. Looking through the list of UK street artists is like a fantasy league of media fostered conceptual stencil kids. Out of the lot, only Inkie is a capable painter and Sickboy beats them hands down as a slick entrepreneur. Cartrain is notable as a joke, more celebrity gossip fame, like his fake cat fight with Damien Hirst and the 'cannabis activism'. The best street artist in the UK in very many people's estimation is a guy called SNUG. His real name is Charlie something or other, English, ex fine art student now in his 30s. http://snugone.com/ Save this morsel for the next dinner party you attend, the moment you want to sound interesting, informed and factually accurate. I'm seriously considering him for my next wiki article. He painted at Meeting of Styles 2008, I have a clear shot of him on the scaffolding. Perhaps he'll approve it for upload to wiki commons.
Thanks again for all your help Graffitinucular (talk) 08:07, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- It looks pretty sound; certainly it's ready for mainspace. If I hadn't already done some work on it myself I'd review and pass it straightaway. The sourcing - well, it could be better in places, but there's enough there to pass the general requirements for notability, which is all you need. Nice work. Yunshui 雲水 08:39, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

BIOL 345 ECOLOGY PROJECT
Hi Yunshui,
My partner and I are currently looking to edit information on a current wiki page - however, we noticed there are multiple pages about the same topic (just under different names) with little information on each. We are considering consolidating all the information but wonder what would be the best strategy: would it be better to create a new page and put all the info on this one page OR just edit a current existing pages by adding new info. Just to keep in mind, we are very new to dealing with wikipedia and want to consider the route with least difficulty.
Thank you and feel free to visit my partners talk page Thelukkolukko to see our current progress.
Thanks!
Aabundo (talk) 21:38, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Aabundo. Having looked at the pages you propose to work on, I would suggest you try expanding the Mount Seymour Provincial Park page. It's currently rated as Start class (i.e. very basic) on the quality assessment scale, so you could try working to bring it up to B class or even Good Article status (have a look at the Good Article assessment criteria for the areas you'd need to develop). You could incorporate some information from the Mount Seymour page, but since that article is about the mountain itself I wouldn't recommend merging it into the park article.
- For an example of a similar article with B or GA status, see Lake District (B) or Pindus National Park (GA) - these will give you some ideas for topic areas to cover, formatting, and suitable sources. Yunshui 雲水 13:08, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
