User talk:Payo
Welcome!
Welcome to Wikipedia, Payo! My name is Ryan, aka Acetic Acid. I noticed that you were new and haven't received any messages yet. I just wanted to see how you were doing. Wikipedia can be a little intimidating at first, since it uses different formatting than other sites that use HTML and CSS. In the long run, though, you'll find that the WikiSyntax is a lot easier and faster than those other ways. Here are a few links to get you started:
- How to edit a page
- Editing, policy, conduct, and structure tutorial
- Picture tutorial
- How to write a great article
There are a lot of policies and guides to read, but I highly recommend reading over those first. If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. Please be sure to sign your name on Talk using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, along with a link to your user page. This way, others know when you left a message and how to find you. It's easier than having to type out your name, right? :)
I hope you enjoy contributing to Wikipedia. We can use all the help we can get! Have a nice day. Sincerely, Ryan. 09:45, August 1, 2005 (UTC)
Hull City graph
Hi Payo, I'm a bit confused about your graph on Hull City's climb through the Football League - it only shows tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3, but Hull City spent plenty of time in the 4th division too. Cheers Beve (talk) 11:14, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Payo, I wish that were true, but Hull City have been in the 4th tier much more recently than that! It's possibly the confusing naming system that muddies the waters, but we were in the 4th tier only six years ago, when Peter Taylor took over. We were promoted out of it in his first full season in charge, 2003-04. Beve (talk) 11:37, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- OK, I'm going to remove it from the article for now. Look forward to it coming back! Beve (talk) 11:46, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

If it helps, the divisions were (stupidly) renamed (sort of) like this:
1st division --> Premiership --> Premier League
2nd division --> 1st division --> Championship
3rd division --> 2nd division --> League One
4th division --> 3rd division --> League Two
Beve (talk) 12:23, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- That's a nice looking graph - good work! Beve (talk) 13:55, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi, can I ask what the rise in the divider for level 1 & 2 followed by the dip for all levels is on the graph? Keith D (talk) 17:42, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Manchester United graph
Manchester United have been playing in the English league system since 1892, not 1902, albeit as Newton Heath. – PeeJay 17:07, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Do you intend to fix the graph or not? If not, I think it should be removed from the Manchester United article as misleading. – PeeJay 07:34, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- The two teams are generally considered to be one and the same, the only difference being their name. – PeeJay 11:43, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- I like the idea of a green and gold line from 1893 to 1902. Matches the line colour to the club colours. – PeeJay 12:04, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Check out Manchester United F.C. seasons for a season-by-season record of Manchester United's history. – PeeJay 13:22, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- That looks good. In some ways it's hard to tell where the point on the graph for each season is, but I'll get used to it. – PeeJay 13:26, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Makes sense. Good job mate. – PeeJay 13:57, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Stoke City Graph
Hello! Just wanted to thank/congratulate you for the excellent graph added to History of Stoke City FC this week - it's amazing how images can do what words can't. With the page hopefully reaching the main page (WP:TFAR) this month, I hope the profile of this graph will be raised. The time taken to stripe the line was well spent, imo :) MickO'Bants (talk) 14:58, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
West Bromwich Albion F.C. graph
Hi, just a note regarding the WBAFC league finishes graph. I think that your graph and my graph each have their merits, but I like the grading and the aspect ratio of yours, and for that reason I think we should go with yours. However, please can I request the following changes:
- Please can numbers (league position) be added to the Y-axis - I'd suggest an interval of about 10
- The numbers on the X-axis are quite crowded - could you make the interval greater, maybe every five years instead of two years?
- If possible, the title should have a an endash (1889–2008) instead of a hyphen (1889-2008)
Hope this is OK to do, and thanks for updating the graph. I've trimmed the caption on the article, which I hope you're OK with. Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 21:42, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, yes a further explanation would be useful. Reporting information is part of what I do professionally, so I am confused why you would have a crowded x-axis but no values on the y-axis. Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 14:36, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking the time to explain your thinking. I'll leave the graph as it is for now, with the caveat that if there are any comments at any future peer review or FAC of the article, then we should be prepared to respond to those. I haven't checked the actual data shown by the graph too closely, but it looks accurate at first glance. If I do spot any errors upon further examination I will let you know. Thanks again for making the graph. --Jameboy (talk) 20:47, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Graphs
Hey, noticed the graphs you've been adding. I'm not sure where you're getting the numbers of teams in each division from, but the dip at the bottom in the 1990s is wrong. Here is a usable and reliable source for final tables; if it helps, I've extracted the numbers of teams in each division from the relevant years, and copied below:
- 1986–87: 22 22 24 24
- 1987–88: 21 23 24 24
- 1988–89: 20 24 24 24
- 1989–90: 20 24 24 24
- 1990–91: 20 24 24 24
- 1991–92: 22 24 24 22
- 1992–93: 22 24 24 22
- 1993–94: 22 24 24 22
- 1994–95: 22 24 24 22
- 1995–96: 20 24 24 24
As you see, the fourth tier went down to 22 when the top tier rose to 22 in the early 90s. hope this helps, cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:02, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
- You're welcome :-) As to Div3S&N, I'd just show it as a single third tier of 22/24/however-many, on the basis each club was only ever in its regional division in any one season. The simplest way is usually the best. Isn't that what you've already done, unless I'm missing something? If a club moved from one region to the other, you could note it on the table, but I probably wouldn't bother. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 10:06, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Port Vale F.C. graph
Your graphs are cool but damn difficult to re-create.
I have all the data in excel, I could send it to you and you do the rest if you want. But how do you deal with league changes, I figured to switch to league rank to rank from the bottom (so 1st becomes 88th or w/e). But then that skews the line the other way so that the early years looks like a 4th tier struggle etc. That is with totally ignoring the issue of them switching between Third Division North and South.
How do you do it? Create separate graphs for separate quantities of leagues and then stitch them together?
Please advice.--EchetusXe (talk) 22:02, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Graph for FC Nantes ?
Hi Payo. I saw your wonderful graphs for English clubs. I recently completed an article about Nantes on the french WP, and I would be very interested by such a document to show Nante's progression since its creation in 1943. Could you do it ? What information would you need ? Vol de nuit (talk) 17:19, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Huddersfield Town F.C. graph
Greetings Payo! I've been improving the information on the Huddersfield Town Wikipedia pages for ages and am amazed by your graphs and was hoping that you could oblige by making one for the Terriers. If you need the positions of each season, I'm more than happy to help you along. Thanks. JRRobinson (talk) 20:37, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
AFL Graphs
Hi,
I am intrested in learning how to make these graphs for some of the AFL clubs on wikipedia.
Could you explain how you do it, or perhaps attach a spreadsheet so I can see how you set up the graphs. I have also messaged you on statnav aswell.

D.C. United
Payo, I've been impressed with your soccer charts, and I was wondering if you could help me out with on for the U.S. team, D.C. United. Perhaps if there was a template, or method you had, I could do it myself. Since its only a 15 year old team, it shouldn't take much, but I thought I'd ask for your thoughts. Best-- Patrick {oѺ∞} 17:41, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Graph for Southampton F.C.
Hey Payo, I love your graph work! I know you're no doubt very busy and overwhelmed with requests for Generic Club F.C. #1 and so on, but if you could either make one of your excellent graphs of league positions for Southampton F.C. or give me a really quick run-down on how to make the graphs like you do then I would be forever greatful! I have read your userpage so I think I know where to find the software, but if I have missed anything blatantly explaining how to do it then please just point me in the direction of the link, guide, or whatever. Thanks a lot :) Andre666 (talk) 16:22, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Villa graph problem
Hi Payo, thanks for putting File:Aston Villa FC League Performance 1889-2008.PNG on the Aston Villa F.C. page a long time ago, but someone has pointed out a big issue with it: Villa were 2nd Division champions in 1959–60 and not 1st Division. As such, the graph is inaccurate. I don't suppose you still have the data saved for it and could amend it? Many thanks. Woody (talk) 12:09, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for that, whenever you can get round to it would be great. Regards, Woody (talk) 17:12, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
A query
Hello. Having seen your excellent graphs on many featured football club pages, I was wondering if you have a step-by-step guide or a template that you use? I wouldn't feel right asking if you could do some for me because I'm sure you have better things to do, unless you support my club that is (doubtful!). I've had a few attempts in Open Office but I have no idea to get it looking like yours, let alone including the useful background which highlights divisional change. If you can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Cheers. Argyle 4 Lifetalk 06:57, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Fiorentina graphs
Hi Payo. I'm an Italian user and I think you could me help for the page ACF Fiorentina in it.wiki. If it's possible, I need a graph that describes ACF Fiorentina League Performance between 1926-2009 (as this). For the results, you could use the "Cronistoria", with the different type of Italian League ("Divisione Nazionale" and "Serie A" are the Italian "FA Premier League", "Prima Divisione" and "Serie B" the "Football League Championship", "Serie C2" the "Football League Two"). If it's a problem, it's not important the number of teams playing in every season. Thanks. 109.235.159.182 (talk) 14:06, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Narayan89

Crystal Palace graph
Hi Payo, just wanted to say i was inspired by your Chelsea graph to make one for Crystal Palace. Managed it after a bit of fiddling in Excel and Photoshop, check it out here. Am sure there may be the odd mistake, possibly with number of clubs in each league but hopefully somebody may spot that! Cheers, extraordinary (talk) 17:38, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
You and Betawiki:
Dear Payo,
I'm Nemo from Betawiki/translatewiki.net and I'm writing to you because I'm collecting some information about the history of the project and the people and facts who made the difference in it. You are user number 33, so you're probably among those; maybe you even remember that it used to be named Nuka-Wiki (from 2005 on).
It would be wonderful if you could tell me something about how you first reached the wiki (who/what told you about it and how), why you decided to register and contribute, what it meant to you, what made you come back (or not) in the following years, if you spread the word about it, what have been in your opinion the most important facts or discussions in these years, etc.: just anything you want and as much as you can or want.
You can reply on my talk (I'm watching it), or email me, or just use this page to add comments, missing points and/or links to other resources, summaries, blogposts, articles, wiki or mailing lists discussions, as you want. Thank you very much for you help!
