Dear Maniak18. - Why did you revert my edit at tat site? The Russian and the English text of the poem is linked. - Why not the German? - Thanks a lot for your answer! -- sokai ?] 17:00, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Sokai,
I removed that link because it is in violation of WP:EL, the External Link Guidelines. Since this is the English Wikipedia, links to other languages of the poem are not needed. For instance, the German poem link fits on the German Wikipedia, but not on the English Wikipedia. If we had the poem in just a few languages on that page, then we would need the poem in all languages and so the page would become a link farm, which wouldn't be good. I am going to remove the Russian link now, for the same reason. Thanks. Maniac18 (talk) 18:15, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Maniac18,
thanks for your fast answer. I now understand the reason and I will deter you from deleting the Russion version because I think it's a good idea to have the "Original" (version) linked. sofar, thanks again and happy Easter :) -- sokai ?] 21:00, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
No problem, glad I could help. I did still remove the Russian link as it would be unfair otherwise. Have a good weekend and holiday. Maniac18 (talk) 21:03, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, what point did you make that I missed?

On the :EL page it specifically says:

What should be linked

4. Sites with other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article, such as reviews and interviews.

So why is linking to the review http://www.comicnerd.com site bad?

Thanks

Hello!
On WP:EL, in the Links normally to be avoided section, it states that (number 4) "Links mainly intended to promote a website. See External link spamming." and also the link provides no other help to the article other than promoting the website and giving a brief summary about the website. The brief summary written next to the external link provides only advertisement and information on the external website and helps the article in no other way.
Thanks. Maniac18 (talk) 22:58, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
It's okay - your links were in violation of WP:EL but they have been removed. And yes, your English is very good! :)

I'm not entirely sure how Wikibooks works. Sorry I couldn't help you. Maniac18 (talk) 17:40, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Add reason for edits ?

It would be very helpful when you cancel a page edit, to say exactly what your reason is. When you delete a new link, it is not helpful just to say this violates the Wikipedia external links policy WP:EL. The policy is about 10 pages long. New people trying their first wikipedia edits and just seeing them deleted for no specified reason, will not feel this is the friendly place as advertised on the Wikipedia welcome pages. Thanks very much. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skene 25 (talk • contribs) 21:42, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
By saying that the edit is in violation of WP:EL is rather clear. If you read through the policy, you can likely see which section verifies why the links were removed. It would be difficult and rather unnecessary to quote direct sentences into the edit summaries, since they are only for brief reasonings of why you are making an edit. Thanks,

Wrongly removed links?

Hi. I've received a message from you saying my external link doesn't comply with Wikipedia guidelines for adding external links, but in the wiki guidelines: "What should be linked" - it says:

"Sites with other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article, such as reviews and interviews." should be linked, which is why I've added my link to an interview. It specifies that interviews can be linked and I only ever add links to relevant interviews which give wiki users more information on a relevant topic and follow wiki guidelines. Thank you. I have therefore complied with Wiki guidelines by linking to a useful interview.:User:Bezpez2008 —Preceding comment was added at 09:54, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Gjenvick

Hi,

I was contacted by user:Gjenvick by email about systematic deletions of his links from Wikipedia, and noticed that you are among several people making these edits. I get the sense that you have a bad impression of him and his motivations.

My background is three years of editing at WP mostly in the subjects of history, ships, and sailing -- not to mention quite a bit of time helping to develop our policy and guideline pages. I've worked with Paul Gjenvick in the past, where he has been very helpful to me and WP by providing documentation and background on obscure historical and maritime topics. While his site does accept advertising and has some merchandise for sale, his motivation is altruistic coming from a deep love of history and willingness to share.

I see that you’ve been a motivated member of WP for several months now and hugely dedicated to protecting the project. Maybe we could talk a bit about how we could work together to incorporate Paul’s information in a way that would make you and others feel more comfortable. Remember that the Wikipedia:External links is merely a style guideline and not an official WP policy page; guidelines help us to make decisions, but don’t mandate rigid actions. Dirk’s robot can be a useful tool, but can also draw incorrect conclusions from the data.

One thing that brought this issue to the forefront was Paul changing the name of his site from Steamship.org to Gjenvick.com, and subsequently going into WP to change the addresses of many links at the same time; this gave a huge correlation between his user name and a single URL. At first blush this would appear to be COI, but I don’t see it as more than being helpful. Paul and I discussed today how we can better integrate his knowledge and resources into WP for the benefit of our readers. I kind of randomly picked you out as a starting point for discussion with the spam patrollers, since Dirk is on wikibreak and you were the only other person kind enough to leave a message on Paul’s page. Do you have time to help me with this?

Thanks! --Kevin Murray (talk) 23:10, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On break?

I noticed that you've not been editing for a while after a flurry of very hard work and enthusiasm in a very hard task for a newcomer (or anyone). I hope that you will stay with us. Don't let a bit of controversy spoil your fun. If you ever need some help, please give me a shout. We need your energy and dedication! Cheers! --Kevin Murray (talk) 02:33, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • No problem. everything worked out. You and others made the logical and expected moves; however, it turned out that he is legitimate. He's now been whitelisted by the bot and we are watching out for him. I'm glad to see theat you are still with us. Have a great weekend! --Kevin Murray (talk) 03:14, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
