I've talked with Yunshui (talk · contribs) briefly, who is your online ambassador already, and they said more ambassador support for the class would be a good thing. I helped with a Georgia Tech Neuroscience class last semester (User:Biosthmors/Intro Neuro), and this semester I'm working with Education Program:Saint Louis University/Signal Transduction (SP13). I see that many articles your class plans to edit are disease based:

I volunteer here to help make sure Wikipedia has as many editors as possible adding high-quality health, science, and medical information. You can see some of my work at deep vein thrombosis, an article I've gotten up to GA status (see also this peer review, for example). Are you aware of WP:MEDRS, and how I used that guideline to help guide my edits at deep vein thrombosis, for example? I'd like to help make sure your classroom experience is a great experience. Professor Potter said my help last semester helped make things the most successful they've been since he started using Wikipedia in the classroom years ago. Are you interested in getting more help for your students? I'm thinking of signing up as another online ambassador for your class, but I'd like to talk first. Hello, Just dropping you a line that two of your students, Isetem13 and 8712NeuroBio, recently uploaded a new version of Distal spinal muscular atrophy type 1. It is fantastic that they took up to improve neurology-related articles, and it is clear that they did lots of research on the topic. Unfortunately, their text does not fully follow the Medicine project guidelines and has quite a few other issues which in my opinion do not qualify it yet as a production-ready article. I listed some of the issues on Talk:Distal spinal muscular atrophy type 1 and informed both editors on the above a few days ago, but received no reaction or response from them. In this situation, given that the new version of the article, although richer in details, is less reliable, I am tempted to revert all the changes and propose to continue working on the draft. Kashmiri, I apologoize for any protocol breaches on the part of my students. This is the first time I have ever done this in a class (or even edited Wikipedia myself). I already have a pile of lists on how to instruct the students a bit differently next year. We have had Yunshui helping as our formal online ambassador alone with Biosthmors informally. A class project you appear to be in charge of

Hi I'm one of the regular reviewers at WP:Articles for creation. I came across Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia which I believe is ready for mainspace, but I'm not sure what I should so with the "Peer edit" content below the end of the article content. Can you help me with it? I will temporarily "store" it in a section of my sandbox.

Dodger67, you are correct that this article is part of a class project. I would direct you to the course page but unfortunately there is a glitch in Wikipedia software that gives an error when you try to go to the page. Wikipedia is working on it. In the meantime, this is my first time doing this (with or without a class) so I am learning all the protocols and etiquette along with my students. My students are required to review a number of their classmates as part of the assignment (and the authors are required to respond to these "reviews"). I have a total of 40 students working on improving 10 stubs. If possible, it would be great if you could just copy the reviews onto the talk page for the newly created article so that the authors can respond to the reviews. A separate but related issue, that you might be able to help with, is that the "group" of articles about Ataxia contain a lot of overlap and repetition. I believe some judicious merging/splitting/editing would help to sort the information more coherently. The affected articles are Ataxia, Cerebellar ataxia, Spinocerebellar ataxia and the newly promoted Autosomal Dominant Cerebellar Ataxia. I agree that there is probably some overlap. My students' page is specifically about an inherited form and does link back to the ataxia and the spinocerebellar ataxia pages. I will be grading the final articles as they exist on April 26th and I think that working on merging or editing in reference to these pages may be beyond the scope of my assignment. I have moved the "Peer edit" commentary to the talk page as you requested and added a note for other editors about preserving it unchanged until you are done with it. I hope the edits that I (and other editors) have done and probably still will do to the article will not negatively impact the student's grade. Once an article is in mainspace it is available for anyone to edit. WP:WikiProject Medicine might be able to assist you with more specialised help if you need it. I am aware that others may edit once the article in in mainspace so I will be checking the history when I do the grading. We will see how well this goes when I grade. Welcome to Wikipedia. We have compiled some guidance for new healthcare editors:

  1. Use high-quality sources for medical content (see WP:MEDRS). High-quality sources include review articles (which are not the same as peer-reviewed), position statements from nationally and internationally recognized bodies (like CDC, WHO, FDA), and major medical textbooks. Lower-quality sources are typically removed.
  2. Reference tags generally go after punctuation, not before; there is no preceding space.
  3. We use very few capital letters and very little bolding. Only the first word of a heading is usually capitalized.
  4. Common terms are not usually wikilinked; nor are years, dates, or names of countries and major cities.
  5. Do not use URLs from your university library's internal net: the rest of the world cannot see them.
  6. Include page numbers when referencing a book or long journal article.
  7. Format references consistently within an article and be sure to cite the PMID for journal articles and ISBN for books; see WP:MEDHOW.
  8. Never copy and paste from sources; we run detection software on new edits.
  9. The ordering of sections typically follows the instructions at WP:MEDMOS.
  10. Think carefully before working on featured articles (these have a gold star at top right). It is often hard to improve featured articles.
  11. Talk to us! Wikipedia works by collaboration at articles and user talkpages.

Responding to talk page query

Hi MMBiology, I saw your questions on my talk page. Firstly, I want to say that my colleague Helaine will be reaching out to you via email, but it is no longer our expectation that students editing health or psychology topics have all work reviewed by a Wikipedia expert. Our trainings and ability to intervene early with student issues has improved, so this is no longer necessary. Students may ask for help with specific issues, of course, but they should receive most feedback from each other.

Regarding your question about autobiographies, I would say that using them depends on the content you are trying to verify. If someone said in an interview that they were born on July 1, 1960, I'd say that's pretty straight-forward to use. I agree that for awards someone has won, you would certainly want to use an independent source, not an autobiography, CV, or staff profile on a university website.

Regarding images, students should review our training about uploading media here. Because you do not own these images, you cannot upload them. Think of uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons as "donating" them. You cannot donate something that is not yours. What you can try to do is contact the person whose photograph you want. They can ask someone who has photographed them in the past to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons. Importantly, the subject of the photograph cannot donate a photograph of themselves unless they also took the picture. Photographers generally own the rights to the images they take, not the subjects. A great deal of biographies and other kinds of Wikipedia articles lack images of any kind because there aren't any available that are compatible with Wikipedia licensing requirements.
