photos of a Canadian artist

Dear Ella: I was reading the page about the upcoming editathon at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and one of the artist names popped out at me. Florence Vale is my mother's cousin. I never met her. I know that her artwork is quite distinctive, but I don't know if she's "notable" in the Wikipedia sense, and of course, as a relative, my opinion on this would not be taken into account anyway.

Although I am not able to attend the editathon, I do have a scan of an old photograph of her as a young woman, taken by my grandfather and rather faded, as well as a good quality snapshot of her with artist Albert Franck on the day of their wedding in the 1920s. If someone at the editathon decides to create a page about her and thinks that these would be useful, I believe they could be uploaded without copyright issues.

I also have a very small watercolour original which she sent to my grandmother in about 1968. Since I now have this, would it be legal for me to upload a low-res scan to Wikipedia Commons? It's quite different from the examples of her work that I see on the Internet.—Anne Delong (talk) 18:11, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anne, Thank you for your message. I would check with The Ingram Gallery in Toronto to make sure that they do not have an issue with uploading images of Florence Vale and her work to Wiki-commons - they represent her estate. An email record will suffice as evidence to support the legality of uploading images that are likely under copyright of the estate. A similar issue was resolved this way when one of my friends was working on another deceased artist's page last year. I am not very familiar with Florence's work but the little I just saw online looks amazing and I am confident that the AGO will have good files on her ensuring her notability. ella dawn (talk) 22:39, 7 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Erin Shirreff requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hmm. Is there a reason why Erin Shirreff wanted to have her page deleted? It seems a bit odd since it's like asking "the internet" not to write anything about one self... -- Sjschen (talk) 04:25, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
She didn't give a reason but since this page was created in relation to an Art+Feminism event I feel that is important to respect the wishes of the female artists we are trying to assist. This is an issue I want to discuss with other organizers and editors during our next meetup Of course, someone else could create a page on her in the future since she is a notable artist. ella dawn (talk) 18:02, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It too bad since the article had potential. But the a larger scope of things, this is an issue of great consequence on wikipedia, namely: Can someone demand of the people who created the article to delete information about them on wikipedia. This may come disturbingly close to Wikipedia:Conflict of interest -- Sjschen (talk) 13:25, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
