All Time World Team

I can guarantee you, that is only because I wouldn't list anybody twice - Schmeichel would be on my world team then ;) Poulsen 07:31, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Garrincha

You reverted some edits to Garrincha which you termed "vandalism". I don't believe that they were vandalism: having seen the original edit by 172.202.200.193 in "Recent Changes", I was unsure whether it was vandalism or not, so I looked up the item "lost his virginity to a goat" and found supporting evidence on the web. I therefore added a reference to this. If this material is good enough to go into a biography of the person, then should it not also be allowed in Wikipedia? I think the footballer was a remarkable figure - the biography's review claims he makes Gazza look like a saint. Accordingly I have replaced the text and reference. Please let me know if you disagree with this. -- MightyWarrior 21:44, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Forgive my ignorance. It was just that I had never heard of this. You can back this up with a link, so I do not disagree. ChaChaFut 21:53, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately you have re-reverted the article in question! And I've made some other minor edits, so I'll have to try and merge the changes. Please try to assume good faith in future before reverting - perhaps a check on the web (eg. Google) first might help. Apology accepted. -- MightyWarrior 22:00, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My turn to apologise - you didn't re-revert, just reworded my text to make it read slightly better. Unfortunately the blank edit summary fooled me into thinking you'd reverted it! No worries. -- MightyWarrior 22:07, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome

My goal is to (a) normalize all the world cup articles to the official FIFA reports, WITH FOOTNOTES explaining where differences of opinion occur, and (b) create articles for every World Cup goalscorer. These articles are just really simple stubs, but if you at least have a stub in place, it makes it easier for people to add in facts until you have a real article. I won't stop until I'm done! I appreciate your comments, it's good to know people are paying attention. Just because 2006 WC is over doesn't mean the game can be ignored! \ Fnarf999 \ talk \ contribs \ 01:10, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw what you put in Wetterström's article, and I think that's about right. It's crazy for us to try to prove who's right, so we just put the official status and if there's any question about that then put that in too. It's not just one or the other. \ Fnarf999 \ talk \ contribs \ 01:35, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. That's probably the only way to achieve some kind of consistency, while keeping users alert about the discrepancies. I have noticed, however, that many times the most reliable sources for information on each nation are the nations' FA websites and sources from each nation in general. These sources are maybe the best to cite in name spelling discrepancies, for example. ChaChaFut 01:51, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FIFA World Cup records

You're welcome! Thanks for your edit on the article FIFA World Cup records too. I didn't realize Eusébio scored 4 pens. The article 1966 FIFA World Cup originally listed only 3, but I've checked FIFA's website and Wikipedia missed one, so your info helped me made an edit. Thank you for cleaning up the reference on the Sándor Kocsis article. I still have a lot to learn about the technical aspects of editing Wikipedia. Thanks again.

Thanks, it was an enjoyable article to translate :). Feel free to add to it or improve the translation. Fabricationary 02:35, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

I appreciate the slight change you made to the Mia Hamm article. It was a minor incorrect detail, but it was nonetheless incorrect.

László Kiss

The FIFA report confuses him with Imre Kiss, which was a goalkeeper. That means Hungary was playing with 2 GKs after the 55th minute! :-P Oh well, I guess the FIFA article you found clears it up. Chanheigeorge 02:01, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to Zinedine Zidane

Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you. hoopydinkConas tá tú? 03:31, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand this is in regard to two edits I made to the Zinedine Zidane article in the last few days:

I'm unsure of why any of those edits would be considered nonsense and/or vandalism. I usually try to make quality contributions to articles, and fight vandalism, especially to Football-related articles. Football knowledge has been a hobby of mine since the 1980s. You can verify this by looking at my contributions, or simply look at my talk. However if indeed those edits were nonsense and/or vandalism as per Wikipedia standards,

  • 1. I apologize if my edits were of poor quality or if they were negative in any way;
  • 2. I appreciate you pointing out my mistakes;
  • 3. I will do my best to improve my edits and be careful not to make the same mistakes again; and
  • 4. Why were my edits not reverted, removed, or changed?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Best regards,

ChaChaFut 02:31, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there ChaChaFut! First of all, please allow me to apologise for the time you spent messaging me. It was a truly unnecessary use of your time, as it seems as if the warning I left you was actually not intended for you, although at the time, I thought otherwise. The diff that prompted me to warn you is as follows; here. When the anonymous user editing with an IP reverted the silliness, I was under the impression that you had added the bit that was reverted. Again, I apologise for my mistake and thank you for both letting me know and spending some of your valuable time helping to ensure that the Zinedine Zidane article stays free of vandalism. In a weak (at best) effort to compensate you for the time exerted on my mistake, I'd be happy to create or work on an article of your choosing for however long it took you to deal with this. Cheers! hoopydinkConas tá tú? 02:44, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mimis Domazos

Hello! I saw your edits in Mimis Domazos page and I'd like to tell u some thing about him: Domazos is a living football legend in Greece (any Greek can assure you for that) and it's one of the most succesful Greek footballers ever (10 times Champion, 3 Greek cups, 1971 European Champions Cup runner-up with Panathinaikos FC). In addition, he had great leadership abilities, as he was Panathinaikos FC & Greece captain for over 13 years. So i cant understand why you added the NPOV template. Please explain me ;) --KaragouniS 11-1-2006 12.29 GMT

Hello, KaragouniS. Thank you for your comments. I can assure you I have absolutely no doubt that he is a legend. But just like Pelé's, Maradona's and Franz Beckenbauer's articles, which are about footballers that are also considered legends and whose great achievements (one can say) do not need explanation or back up, Mimis Domazos deserves a neutrally-written article, complete with references, that will let the reader know of his true greatness by presenting the well-documented facts. I hope this helps. I can guarantee you I only placed those tags with the good intention of causing other users to check the article out and contribute to make it better. I myself might help. Thanks again for your civil approach. Best regards. --ChaChaFut 22:53, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you're absolutely right. I forgot for a moment that we're members of an international online encyclopedia :P (You see, I compared him only with the other Greek footballers). Anyway, I've made some corrections and wikified the article in order to do it as neutral as I could! Maybe Mimis Domazos is a living legend for Greek football, but Pele, Maradona and Beckenbauer are undoubtedly Football Gods ;). I'd like to thank you for helping me improve this article. See you around :) --KaragouniS 2-11-2006 18.06 GMT

Vandal warning removed - technichal mistake Alex Bakharev 03:53, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. This was actually a very stupid technical mistake om my part, for which I apologize sincerely. I happened to spot vandalism by 64.12.116.10 on the Lacey Chabert article, and then decided to see if this was a recurrent vandal, and when I saw his edit at the Osip Mandelstam article, my intention was to revert his edit, but for some reason I didn't realize this had been already done, and I ended up reverting the anti-vandal revert. This was a big Oops, and while I do make technical mistakes once in a while, I would never intentionally vandalize an article, as you can confirm by looking at my contributions. Plus, I do spend time reverting vandalism, which is what I intended to to on this article (which is of somebody I never heard of :( ). Earlier today I had to revert about 15 vandal edits by the same user, and I guess I got carried away in doing that. Again, be assured that my intention was good, I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time... please accept my sincere apologies, and I will try not to make the same mistake ever again. --ChaChaFut 03:51, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good evening. Per the discussion about privacy concerns expressed at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Privacy of birthdays, date of birth should generally not be added to the biographies of living non-public or semi-public figures. So far, that policy has been interpreted fairly strictly with a pretty high bar being set for the definition of "public figures" who are assumed to have given up their rights to privacy.

By the same token, we should not be adding Category:Date of birth missing to articles unless we have made the case that the person meets the "public figures" threshold. Otherwise, we're just baiting new users into adding content even though the community has already said that we shouldn't include that particular data point. Category:Year of birth missing is okay but the exact date is often not. Thanks for your help. Rossami (talk) 05:36, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is no such tag that I know of. The recognition of the need to protect privacy is a recent one.
I have been working through the category and removing the tag from essentially all pages except dead people or patently obvious public figures such as heads of state. I haven't run across any yet that I considered to be close judgment calls. (I assume that the biographies of pop-stars who are truly public figures already include the DOB so I wouldn't have found them while fixing the category taggings.) But if there is a question on a particular biography, we should open a discussion about it on the article's Talk page. Thanks again. Rossami (talk) 07:08, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Doing something about the ridiculous date autoformatting/linking mess

Dear Cha—you may be interested in putting your name to, or at least commenting on this new push to get the developers to create a parallel syntax that separates autoformatting and linking functions. IMV, it would go a long way towards fixing the untidy blueing of trivial chronological items, and would probably calm the nastiness between the anti- and pro-linking factions in the project. The proposal is to retain the existing function, to reduce the risk of objection from pro-linkers. Tony 01:01, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ignacio Tréllez is the name given in RSSSF [1] and Planet World Cup [2]. I changed it, because as you said, it sounded more Spanish, so I'm taking a guess that it's the correct one. Chanheigeorge 08:12, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The {{Unreferenced}} tag is for articles that cite no, or only insignificant, sources. Flagging this entire article as "unreferenced" is both inaccurate and unfair to the actual editors of it. In point of fact, I personally added numerous ref cites to it myself over the last couple of days. If you feel that something in it needs to be referenced, please tag that statement with {{Fact}} or use {{Unreferencedsect}} if there is an entire section with no references. — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 09:21, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are absolutely right, and I apologize for the mistake. The reason why I placed the tag at the top was because I didn't see any 'References' section at all, and now that I saw the article again, the references are present and indeed well placed. My browser (Firefox) must have cut off the page, giving me the wrong impression. Again I apologize for the error and for wasting your time. And thank you for the great work on the Cue sports articles. --ChaChaFut 22:49, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I just dropped in to apologize for lecturing you — the <references /> code was actually missing from the article when you dropped by and tagged it (although the article did still show various "[1]"-style ref footnotes, inline, it would be easy to miss them with the entire ==References== section missing! D'oh. Anyway, nothing wrong with your browser.— SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] 01:51, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no problem then. The important thing is that the article is properly referenced, and that we are both contributing positively. (P.S. Browsers do that sometimes, I've heard). Happy editing... --ChaChaFut 03:11, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reassessment of football articles

I notice you've been downgrading the importance rating of a number of articles. Now I don't usually bother with filling in the importance field due to being unsure what to put at what level, but I'm suprised that you've downgraded Manchester City F.C. to mid - it's the article listed on {{Importance Scheme}} as exemplifying a high importance article! Oldelpaso 18:20, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The reason why I changed the rating was because in my personal interpretation of the importance scale, most top flight clubs fall within either the "Mid" or "High" categories, with the "High" ones being the ones that are universally famous. Sure, the importance scheme says that an article in the "High" category doesn't necesarily have to be internationally notable, but I don't agree with that. However, just the way those guidelines are not written in stone, my edits are just my opinion, and when I rate articles I just try to be as accurate as possible at the level that the four categories allow (which, by the way, I consider insufficient; I think there should be more levels of importance. See for example, SportsAddicted's scale), so please, feel free to change the rating of this article and any other article to the one you might consider appropriate. Thanks for dropping by. --ChaChaFut 00:25, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If he is in fact living that would make him one of the earliest World Cup Participants still to live. If you are interested in the matter and find anything, I'd appreciate you drop by and let me know. Thanks for your communication. --ChaChaFut 00:07, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Someone on Wikipedia has a connection with http://www.olymad.com/. A search of the database reveals that he died in 1956. That's the best answer I've been able to find although, given the limited access to the site, I'm not sure if it counts as a reliable source or not. That is, however, the most likely answer. Re-assessment

Hi,I notice that you reassessed a load of football articles at a rate of up to 3-4 a minute. I'm not sure that 15-20 seconds per article is sufficient to determine the importance of an article and make the edit to change it as well. While I agree with you one some of the articles you have downgraded from high to mid (Lampard & Gerrard), some of them pay little regard to the achievements of the people comcerned. Players I feel were justifiably rated as high importance:

  • Francisco Sá the most successful player in the history of Copa Libertadores with 6 titles would at least meet the "is only notable within a particular continent" part of the High importance specification.
  • Herminio Masantonio, top scorer in 2 Copa Americas 3rd highest scorer in the history of Argentine football.
  • Roberto Cherro, Boca Juniors highest ever scorer, lots of titles including Copa America.
  • Oscar Ruggeri 1 world cup, 2 Copa America, Copa Libertadores, 4 league titles, South American player of the year 1991.
  • Américo Gallego 1 world cup, copa libertadores various other titles as a player, 4 Argentine leagues with 3 different teams as a manager, but now according to Wikipedia lesser achievements than those of Alan Shearer?

All of these players achieved much more in terms of medals and in many cases continental fame than any of Dennis Bergkamp, Duncan Edwards, Alan Ball, Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne David Seaman, John Terry & John Charles. Perhaps you were only judging their removal on whether you had heard of them? I don't know, but their removal and the retention of other much less decorated players from Europe (especially England) makes the High importance category more Euro-Anglo centric and even more recentist. I just can't figure out what criteria you were using to do this re-assessment and how you did it so quickly. English peasant 00:01, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your message. I did not base the re-assesments on the 15-20 seconds it takes to edit the articles, I did the re-assesesments for consistency with other articles and based on my the football knowledge (whether limited) I've gained over the years. In general, to me, the "High" importance should be left to the true legends of the game (so I think I agree with you about the Europeans, maybe except for John Charles). I missed Bergkamp, Seaman, and Terry (definitely not "high" class). And just so you know, I tend to be everything but "recentist" when it comes to football (just look at the articles I've written or made major edits to). I was also just trying to apply my interpretation of which articles should be rated High, Mid, Low, etc. according to the Wikiproject page. I interpret that the ratings are not meant to rate the skill or achievements of the players, but the encyclopedic content that the subject would deserve. They are a means of controlling how well covered the football topics are in the encyclopedia, and which ones are to be prioritized. I am sorry if I caused you to spend your time worrying about this.

Your analysis of how and why these players meet certain rating levels is very good and very valid, so I even will revert Ruggeri, and Cherro to High myself. By all means feel free to revert any other ones you feel I re-assesed incorrectly. Thank you for your contributions. --ChaChaFut (talk) 00:22, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou for your calm response to my overheated reaction to your edits. I've seen your contributions on my watchlist before and had a look at some of your articles, you do fine work. As for the importance scale, I think its more than a bit confusing, I tried to start a discussion on better definition of inclusion criteria but it didn't even get started enough to say that it fizzled out. I find it odd that someone like Gerrard (Champions league winning captain), although not (yet?) a true great like Di Stefano is rated as the same importance as Gareth Bale. I would be a lot more prepared to go around adding tags to footy articles if the criteria were more clearly defined and didn't rely so much on POV like "true great". Get back to me if you would like to discuss the possibilities of starting a debate on inclusion critria, if we could find some criteria to define "true great" I think it would be much better. Kind regards English peasant 10:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and Thank You

Am glad that you like the futbol contributions that I have done in wikipedia, for what I can tell you are from Guatemala, I hope you like the 2008–09 in Guatemalan football article and also if you like that article, you should check this other 2 articles es:Anexo:Torneo Clausura 2009 (Guatemala) and es:Torneo Clausura Primera División de Guatemala 2009, which I edit at the spanish wikipedia, I wish I could do more for the Guatemala futbol articles, but the lack of reliable sources has hamper my efforts, but anyways am glad someone cares about my little efforts to make the futbol articles better. I too would also like to thank you, for having done several good contributions to wikipedia.--Bocafan76 (talk) 04:06, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The above article is being re-assessed as part of the GA Sweeps project The re-assessment has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass; otherwise it will fail. See Talk:1930 FIFA World Cup for things needing to be addressed. Reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Calmer Waters 14:40, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Garrincha-Estrela Solitaria-poster.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Garrincha-Estrela Solitaria-poster.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 02:48, 8 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Task Force

Hello. I saw that you are on WikiProject football. I was wondering if you would like to join a task force on national teams. To join, go to here and add your name. If you don't want to participate, then just ignore this message. The task force has not yet been created, but if enough people join, it will be created. Thanks

Thank you for joining the National Team task force! (I created a task force page for it already) First things first, I will be available during the evening (New York City Time Zone) and on the weekends. I try to check my account during the week, but sometimes life doesn't let me. Maybe we can set up a time to chat? Anyway, if you know someone who would like to join the task force, please invite them. Thank you SO much for joining. Our first task is to tag pages. This should take a few months. To see which pages to tag, look here. Looking forward to talking to you later, Bar Code Symmetry (Talk) 02:13, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

World Cup qualification is over for the year, and now is time to start work. We will be adding squad info for all the teams that have played. No rush. I'll take OFC, CAF, and the Caribbean part of CONCACAF (including Bermuda, Guyana and Suriname). You can have Central America and Canada, CONMEBOL, and/or AFC (Or split it into the Middle East or Southeast Asia or whatever you want). Here's how we'll do this:
  1. Familiarize yourself with Template:Nat fs g player, which is the template recommended.
  2. Look at a qualification page appropriate for your choice of confederation
  3. Choose a team. If that team has a squad listed that says updated as of (last game's date), go to the next one. Popular teams have better squad listings, so Canada or Japan or Australia you can almost assume it's correct. We are focusing on the Montserrats and Cook Islands of the world.
  4. Use {{Nat fs g player}}. (See an example in use)
  5. For Caps and Goals use this site
  6. Add our task force to the talk page if it isn't there already.
I know this is extremely hard work, but it has to be done some time. Hope to hear back, Bar Code Symmetry (Talk) 01:54, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invite to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
