Reasons why a Japanese-media TBAN is not giving me much room
1) Anything tangent-related to Japanese media, is just media. And not all media hold the same rules, policies, sources, and structure. Its a long transition just to make significant edits until to prove to the community i can edit without issues. I think what many people fail to understand is how "Media" in general is such a different scope. Those that are inspired by Japanese related media aren't all treated the same way. For example:Scott Pilgrim is completely different from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
2) For video game related content, i have absolutely no problem editing. The problem however is if the community wants to see me make significant contributions, then by all means. But WP:VG is saturated with help. Any article i want to work on is either impossible to find sources because A) they are older than the internet, B) obscure, or C) Japanese related content, and I've caught myself too many times almost breaking the TBAN because of it. Its a very taxing thing to constantly run into articles you have an interest in instinctively and then finding out that they fall into that category. I worked on WonderSwan not because it was Japanese, but it was a cute video game console, and thought it deserved some attention.
3)We all know i can edit without problems with other members. The members I've worked with and had significant issues are all banned now. I personally thought they should've been banned a long time ago. As for me? There are members who know i can edit. And i know that even those who oppose know i can edit without issues. I'm trying to show it in AN. I also am trying my absolute best to not take any of the negative comments about me personally. Its a very difficult thing to do, because they are about me, and i'm only human. I learned. I don't want to argue with anyone. I just want to edit. But i also want to make "significant" contributions. I'm still willing to accept all the blame for what has happened in the past. I've learned. There are olive branches sent out to those i normally would never sent out in a heartbeat. When it comes to Indefinite bans, they get a 1-year interval without showing needing a single sign of proof of there improvement. TBANs don't have that requirement either. There is a reason why some feel this ban is controverial, its why it was fought multiple times. Whats the difference between back then and before? I'm not trying to "fight" it. I'm not trying to say its wrong, i'm just asking for some room where i can prove myself.
I know those who work with both WP:VG and WP:ANIME know exactly what i mean. Its not exactly a straight forward Tban, and i know others are mentioning it as a very controversial ban too. I'm not trying to argue or criticize at all, this is an honest question: If the topic ban is "Japanese media", can't you find a single United States/European developed video game to contribute to? I mean, I get it - I vastly prefer Japanese developed games too, and don't have much interest in other ones...but if I had to, I could certainly some non-Japanese ones. I created VS Racing 2, for example. Anyways, you could work on something like, Assassin's Creed Chronicles, has a ton of potential for expansion/splits/rewrites, certainly a ton of sources exist out there, and would not violate your topic ban. Assassin's Creed Chronicle is definitely one option and i'll definitely see what i can do with the article. If you can find me 4 or 2 more articles exactly like Assassin's Creed Chronicle, i will happily redact it. I'm still having a difficult time looking for games. The ones that come up in my head end up being Japanese or already GA-status. Or i don't see anything more significant i can do to improve it. Its not a matter of me seeing Japanese/non-Japanese games differently, its a matter of me having to find the games because i have relatively no knowledge of them. Have you heard of Cosmic Star Heroine? It looks to have similarities to jrpgs, but is all western made as far as I can tell. There isn't an article yet, but I easily found 5+ sources after a brief Google search. Looks like it could be up your alley, though I'll keep looking too. @Czar: I consider all initial release dates of all noted regions (EU, NA, PAL) as major release dates. What i'm concerned is that people have different definitions of "first major release". But it also gets trickier with foreign games where it was released in another country form another language, then localized in other regions. For example, some games were released in South Korea, but have only a week or two weeks difference from the NA localization from the PAL localization. This is a big enough change that there is room to discuss granularity after the main tenets are ironed out. It doesn't have to be in one fell swoop. Films and albums release in different formats in different locales with different features all the time—it's analogous. I'd define first major release the same as the other infoboxes do—the very first date. Differences by region, if they matter (and they usually don't), are designed to be explicated in the Release prose. But I don't think that needs to be part of the proposal—it could, alternatively, be month-year instead of date, or it could be the first major release separated by region, as you put it, but that's for the group to decide. Ostensibly the other fields should work the same way—the main developer, the main publisher. The infobox is designed for quick access to definitive traits, not every detail or nuance about a release. @Czar:Undue weight is what I'm worried about. Giving more emphasis on the first one even if it's just weeks apart. The biggest difference with film and albums is they aren't in a competition within hardware. Also they usually share the same publisher. I don't think it's so easy to compare. Initial release dates of each region is important if it's related to the initial release. What we're doing is trying to synthesize what is more relevant just by determining which is the earliest release date. For example: let's say a game was confirmed to release on Xbox one, ps4, and Wii u. Those are already confirmed relevant consoles. Now let's say Xbox one/ps4 have a simultaenious release but Wii U takes a couple Months. Who are we to say that isn't relevant initial release? Lets also point out that the release dates are just a couple weeks apart from the release north American from PAL region? In previous discussions it was confirmed both would have a release, so the question rises again? The case of Rise of the Tomb Raider (infobox dates on the right) is similar to your scenario. Instead of cataloging these dates, I would suggest that we list "November 10, 2015" in the infobox, only mention the differences in region in a Development section footnote if even necessary, and move the other port timeframes into the Dev/Release section. The delay between the port releases, if mentioned by secondary sources, belongs in the Dev section, and but it's only important to note the specific dates if the sources do so. Do we need to have the dates of each release or region in the infobox? Good example—what matters most for Final Fantasy (video game) is "1987" (or "December 18, 1987" if anyone can actually source it). The barrage of unsourced dates (and they typically are unsourced) aren't helpful. Instead, the section dedicated to the ports and their features is exactly what we should be encouraging—cited commentary on the difference between ports. Notice how the table in that section doesn't use exact dates. I'd still prefer sourced years in that column, but the format of prose naturally encourages editors to leave out extraneous detail so as to form better sentences. I do believe we still need to keep everything considered as part of the original release, at least if it follows closely to what was originally intended to be released in. For FF (video game), that would have the original NES release, but also mention the original release from its own country, and then the following english countries (if the intent was to release it in those countries in the first place and followed through). Create new parameters without deleting the old such as original console, original release date and original publisher(s). We keep all relevant regions if the release dates are relatively close together. And if they're not, we mention other releases in the infobox but only for console (not dates).
