Goals
- Make Basel a GA.
- Write History of Basel.
- Make Basel a FA.
- Establish WP:BASEL.
- Create Basel categories as needed.
Questions
Article issues
Should Bishopric of Basel redirect to Roman Catholic Diocese of Basel? Speyer, Strassburg, and others do not.- Done: Now there's Prince-Bishopric of Basel
- Should the break occur at the expulsion of the bishop from Basel to Porrentruy? Or at Napoleon's creation of the Republic of Rauracia?
- Napoleon, I guess. That's when the bishop ceased to hold land, right?
Bishop of Basel should redir to the Diocese article.A hatnote at the top of Roman Catholic Diocese of Basel should point to the historic Bishopric of Basel.Prince-Bishop of Basel should redir to the latter, the Bishopric.
Category issues
- For categorizing, is the city of Basel always the same as the canton of Basel-City? When is it and when isn't it?
- What does DE Wikipedia do? See Basel (Begriffserklärung)
- For professions, I would consistently argue against continuing the half-canton dichotomy.
According to the category page, Category:People from Basel (city) is supposed to include people from both half-cantons. Do we need "(city)" in cat name? There's confusion here.- Category name changed from People from Basel in Sept '07, as part of a batch.
- Name change request in July '08 failed to achieve consensus. Only two of us commented.
- Query at the talk page for WikiProject Switzerland got bupkes.
- Another CfD query on 15 September resulted in name change to Category:People from Basel-City.
- Around December 2011 the category names changed to Category:People from Basel-Stadt and Category:People from Basel-Landschaft.

Basel-Stadt
The canton's official name is Basel-Stadt (Bâle-Ville). It's often rendered "Basel-City" in English, but the cantonal government refers to itself in English as "Canton of Basel-Stadt."

Basel-Landschaft
The official English name of the canton is (or was) Basel-Country (Basel-Landschaft, Bâle-Campagne, Basilea-Campagna). It's often shortened to Basel-Land and its abbreviation is BL. In English it was (as of 2008) the "Canton of Basel-Country."
Historically this area was a dependency or fiefdom of feudal lords, especially the Bishop of Basel; then it became subject to the city as the Regio basiliensis or Baselbiet. It's German-speaking.
