Release
The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024.[3] In August 2024, Magnolia Pictures acquired North American distribution rights to the film, scheduling it for a simultaneous release in theaters and video on demand on November 1, 2024.[4]
Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 75% of 24 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.5/10.[5]
Matt Donato of Collider rated the film a 7 out of 10.[3] Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review and wrote, "...The Gutter — like an early Paul Beatty novel — seems destined to be a cult classic."[6] Stephen Saito of Variety also gave the film a positive review and wrote, "Laughter strikes from all sides in The Gutter, the kind of brash and boisterous broad comedy that has largely been missing from multiplexes in recent years."[7] Fletcher Peters of The Daily Beast gave the film a negative review and wrote, "But all in all, do these bonkers, fantastical edits to the game of bowling make The Gutter a fun, farcical ride? Well, also no."[8]
