Talk:Yoshimitsu (Namco)
Tachi
In order to prevent an edit war over Yoshimitsu's weapon, I have decided to explain the situation of the term "tachi" with regards to his sword. It is not unheard of for Namco to release basic biographical information that is needlessly ambiguous, mysterious or even misleading. Many of these instances, however, can easily be overcome with basic detective work. Yoshimitsu's "katana" is one such example of this type of misleading information. You see, while the word katana may refer to a specific type of sword, it can also be a general moniker for any sword made in that Japanese longsword style. And while Namco assigns the moniker "katana" to Yoshimitsu's basic biography, they neglect to take into account that the Soul Calibur II weapon gallery feature disclaims Yoshimitsu's blade as a specific katana when it writes that his sword is one that is no longer used in Japan. Instead, there is much to indicate that his sword is, instead, a tachi. The tachi is the Japanese sword that predates the specific katana, and interestingly enough, the shift from the use of tachis to katanas among samurai in the Japanese military occurred sometime in the seventeenth century, right around the time that the Soul Series takes place. He also wears the sword in a different way than Mitsurugi, and the two specific weapons were each worn in a different way. That being said, the reason the sword of Yoshimitsu from Tekken is labeled as a "katana" is that while there is certainly reason to believe that the generic katana is the same one that Soul Calibur Yoshimitsu uses, there is no concrete proof, and thus it must be labeled "katana" in the chance that they are different swords. If you see it incorrectly labeled, it is kindly asked that you restore it to its correct state. Thank you for your understanding.
Doubt he's dead
Yoshimitsu has been in every Tekken game and according to Namco exec interviews, "one of the favorite characters, thus the reason why he always gets the best costumes."
Remember, he has been shot by bullets before and lived.
- It's been promised he'll be in every new Tekken game with two new costumes every time. That's essentially saying "He can't die!". Sharpevil 21:50, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
It has been said in Aracadia Magazine that he will be in the next game. Appearantly, it is official, as it was said in an imterview with Tekken 6's director, Katsuhiro Hirada. Go to sdtekken.com/tekken-6/.Michael Mad 16:27, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- Why is it that every source I find for this always points back to the Tekken Zaibatsu forums in the end? Why can't I see a single source for this that comes from something that can be linked to? Or at least verified by other gaming news sites? King Zeal 16:57, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I don't know why. Anyway, it is official, Namco has even released a picture of him from Tekken 6.Michael Mad 13:54, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
Trivia?
I've been reading through the Soul Calibur biographies and noticed that Yoshimitsu is the only one who lacks a "Trivia" section. I'm not sure if there isn't any trivia to be found, but I just thought I'd bring this up.
Oops, I missed Yoshi...heh. Well, already fixed. Hope its of your liking. I was thinking on doing Trivias for Tekken, but I don't know. Does anyone want that? (Johnny Master 07:48, 16 March 2006 (UTC)).
Well I've removed that section, putting anything worthy into the other sections, all for the simple reason that it is all trivial. No Tekken character has any trivia section(because of me), so this one won't be any different. Michael Mad 17:47, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Robot or not?
I have read in the trivia for Tekken that Yoshi is now fully mechanised, so he should be a robot or cyborg, right? Well, I donłt think so, because the only official thing I heard was that he had armor upgrades, but not bodz ones. I think he maz had something like a lil cold sleep treatment or a few implants or something like that, but not in the amaunt that he should be called fully mechanised. That robot look is because of the armor. Thats all.
- In the booklet of T1 it says that he is a robot. Though in T2 he looks very human, you can almost see his face. Namco is as always very ambiguous. I think he's a human with armor. His left arm is a robot arm.Aeneiden-Rex 12:07, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Character Analysis
I'm pretty sure this is blatant original research. Can anyone explain otherwise? Night Gyr 06:15, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
- I can explain the SCII analysis, if that's of any help. You're right in that this information is not found in any traditional "published" material like journals, newspapers, etc., but it IS the result of painstaking research by players who have been playing for years and have "published" their findings on the forums on soulcalibur.com. For example, if there WERE an academic journal for soulcalibur.com, you can be sure they would have the same findings that the soulcalibur.com forum members found. It is based on analyzing frame data, comparing it to other character's frame data, and proven strategies in tournament settings. That's the best I can explain it. In general, published fighting game strategy guides do not capture nearly the depth that fighting games provide because it takes years and many people to find this information, not some guy paid by BradyGames or something. -- Bubbachuck 00:30, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
2 pages
I think Yoshimitsu should have 2 pages (Yoshimitsu (Tekken) and Yoshimitsu (Soul Calibur)). It is too confusing having 2 seperate biographies and trivia sections. They are different people anyway. Maybe have a third page linking to both his Tekken and Soul Calibur pages which has a few sentences informing people of his role in 2 different games.
We could have a third about the sword. The history would say things that happen to it and where it goes. Some trivia could be transfered from the current page. - The 4th Snake
- A separate page for the sword would be overkill, but yes, I do believe it is time we split the page. Sharpevil 21:57, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
I think that seperate pages for the two characters would be good if implemented well. They are two different characters, and the article is already quite big, and will be larger again once Tekken 6 is released later this year. Michael Mad 13:50, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay then. Done. Michael Mad 16:00, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
nothing is done yet, as i know yoshimitstu is something like devil. hints that information, pay attention to his voice ha haa.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.235.213.97 (talk) 20:48, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
the sword
it says that in Tekken he names himself after the sword, and in SC he names the sword after himself, shouldn't it be the opposite? I thought that in SC he takes the name from the sword? Aeneiden-Rex 12:10, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Soul Calibur takes place before Tekken. Tekken Yoshimitsu couldn't have named the sword after himself if it was already called Yoshimitsu. - The 4th Snake
There's nothing saying that they're, in fact, the same person. It's quite impossible, really. Tekken takes place in the 21st century, SC takes place in the 17th. Since Yoshimitsu's arm is the only thing about him mechanized, he wouldn't be able to live that long. Sharpevil 21:53, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
I think that there are two options: 1.The SC Yoshi is actually the great great great(i think you got the point) father of the Tekken Yoshi. And,that the sword was passed from father to son in the SC Yoshi's family. And then, the Tekken Yoshi was born, and his father gave him the Yoshimitsu sword(SC Yoshi's sword named after him),and then, the new born baby (Tekken Yoshi) was named after the sword.
2.They're the same person.some people say that he is immortal because he was shot and he is still alive.... - Dark Seraph
Yoshimitsu's Name
I don't know who keeps deleting it, but I thought it would be relevant to mention in the article that his name was inspired by famous sword designer, Ohno Yoshimitsu. http://www.galatia.com/~fer/sword/beauty/ohno.html
- How do you know that his name is inspired by that dude? Have you got any sources for it? Has Namco confirmed it that his name was inspired by that guy? Aeneiden-Rex 11:07, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I was told that he was named after a sword and/or the maker who is well known in Japan. No, I don't have any source from namco to back this up, but the evidence is already there. There is a famous sword maker called Yoshimitsu, and the character is distinguished by his sword... I just put two and two together. If namco has some contact address I would ask them to confirm this, but I would be very surprised if the company took my question seriously, let alone give me an answer. It would use a lot of their time to find this out. The only real way to get an answer would be to send a personal letter to the character designer himself, and I don't think that is going to happen.
- Ohno Yoshimitsu is not the only guy in history with the name Yoshimitsu. There have been other samurais named Yoshimitsu so he could be named after one of those. But who told you he was named after that guy? I don't think it's necessary to have it in the article since it's really not confirmed by Namco that Yoshimitsu acctually is named after Ohno Yohimitsu. Aeneiden-Rex 14:25, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Told by who? You need a definite and reliable source that can be checked by other people as well. True, it might be obvious - putting two and two together - but without a source it's still just a theory (albeit a well backed-up one). //Frostious 14:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Newest trivia
Someone added that in Soul Calibur 3 Yoshimistu's alternate costume is the same as the Tekken 5 costume (with the mask). Seems a little far-fetched to me, personally I don't see the resemblance. Should it still be left as it is? //Frostious 12:45, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
No, remove it, it's not the same Aeneiden-Rex 12:24, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Facts
Did you know that in Soul Calibur 3 Yoshimitsu is the only player with more than 10 Unblocable attacks? He's also the only one who can fly and heal himself. His "Zig" kick is pretty lethal too. It can take out about one sixth to one fifth(17%-20%)of your oppenents health when you perform the move. Also, the word "yoshi" in Japanese in means "good luck" while the word "mitsu" means for "light"--so when Yoshimitsu's name is translated into Japanese dialect, his name would be said "Good-luck-light".Stale Junco 22:48, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- That is interesting and probably true, but Yoshimitsu is also the name of both a famous Japanese tanto-maker, and shogun, and the character is most likely named for one of them.--65.6.164.26 (talk) 00:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Though the lack of fact, his name highly possibly derives from the Japanese tanto-maker. --TX55TALK 11:54, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Tekken 1 Ending Non-canon?
How do we know this is non-canon? Yoshimitsu didn't necessarily have to win the tournament for this event to happen. Debt Jr.
I agree. He didn't have to win for it happen. Also, it establishes who Yoshimitsu is, what he does and, to a lesser extent, Marshall Law's money troubles. It should be listed as canon. - The 4th Snake
Speaking of the canon status of endings, Bryan Fury has been confirmed via a new trailer to be in Tekken 6. I can only imagine that Yoshimitsu's Tekken 5 ending has to be non-canon, as Bryan couldn't have survived Yoshimitsu's ending(this may also mean that, if Bryan's ending is canon, Yoshimitsu is dead).Michael Mad 18:28, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- Canon information is all speculation, anyway. Even the endings we "know" to be canon (such as Jin's) leave too much room for other people to start interpreting what they believe to be "possibly canon" or "probably canon" (like Xiaoyu's TTT special ending or Bryan's T3 ending). It should all be removed. King Zeal 19:28, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- Besides, Bryan's ending goes dark before the gunshot. Maybe Nina's got something against him.Sharpevil 21:55, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, Yoshimitsu is in Tekken 6, so either both endings are non-canon or Yoshimitsu survived Bryan's ending. Michael Mad 17:51, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Human/Robot?
I can't believe there is no mention of what on earth Yoshimitsu actually is. Why is there no mention of it as that's the reason I came to this page, to find out whether he is human, robot, or maybe both.
It's very confusing because in the first game he appears all metal, indicating he is either robotic or a human in full body armour, why the mask? Then in Tekken 2 we see that he is human underneath the armour he is wearing. But then in Tekken Tag we are told in a way that he is all artificial with his stage music's lyrics, 'no ears, no eyes, no body, no head', and plus there is no indication he is human, he looks all artificial in the later games. So what's the story behind what he actually is? And why is there no real description of it.
I feel that whoever knows the story must add it to this page immediately. If he is now all artificial but started out all human, why is there no timeline of how he became all artificial, and what instances caused him to turn into what he is today, there's no real description of it unfortunately and it's a question a lot of people would like to find out. Is it simply a case of Namco not really following storylines? And not really telling us much history, because I'm sure he was said to be all robot in Tekken 1, yet in Tekken 2 they make him appear to be human underneath, it's all pretty confusing thanks to Namco, I wonder if anyone will ever get the answers.
From what I've picked up from the article, he was human in Tekken 1 and lost his hand. Boskonovitch replaced it and over the years, he started to replace more and more of his body parts with cybernetic ones. In Tekken 5, you can see that he has human arms. - The 4th Snake 19:32, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
Reason for Tag
Is this tag really necessary? The problem with a character like Yoshimitsu is that he crosses over from Tekken into Soul Calibur. That's why he's written as he is. Perhaps I'm wrong and there's a better way to write this article. Has anyone seen the movie "Curdled"? Dessydes 05:30, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
- Since this is the same character, why do we need to split it? Dread Lord CyberSkull ✎☠ 11:53, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

General Tekken characters advice
Having scanned through three or four (the ones who appear in all sequels) of the Tekken characters, I have one or two suggestions.
- There are tags at the top of the pages describing that the articles are too 'in-universe' (for want of a better phrase). It would be more helpful to describe things such as character designs rather than regurgitating the game plots.
- As far as I am aware (and I am merely a casual fan of the early games in the series), each character uses a different fighting style, but these are barely mentioned in the articles. The games' documentation may not describe each fighter, but I am sure martial Arts practitioners would recognise some of the styles that the fighters portray.
- The articles describe how, for example, Paul Phoenix keeps missing out on winning the tournament outright. However, is it not when oyu play through the tournament with each character, a cut scene depicts their full victory. Explain what storyline is the most predominant, and why.--Macca7174talk 11:26, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Tennis Racquets
I know nothing about fighting games, do not understand why the term tennis racquets was used and the link is no help either. I'm guessing at one time or another, a unlockable secret allowed a player to wield tennis racquets, and everything else since then has been labeled as such, but I have no idea and it is not clear to the layman. please could this be amended, possibly by using an appropriate link? Betaben (talk) 22:23, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- The section states that Yoshimitsu's sword can be used as a tennis racquet within Anna Kournikova's Tennis Challenge, a game developed by Namco. King Zeal (talk) 22:54, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
Combined
And the two Yoshimitsu's have been combined why? Mythmonster2 (talk) 18:51, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe the merge of the two article is because of some reason similar to Wild Dog being merged with List of Time Crisis characters.1 But, Tekken Yoshimitsu is not Soul Yoshimitsu. They are two different persons. --TX55TALK 15:16, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Of course not, otherwise the article would be called Yoshimitsu (Tekken) or Yoshimitsu (Soul Calibur). It's just one article covering two extremely similar yet different characters that share points of notability as well. But again by no means is it to say they're the same person: just Yoshimitsu characters by Namco.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 15:22, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Yoshimitsu pic
Can I offer a suggestion of using Yoshimitsu's Tekken 2 version as the article's artwork in the infobox? He goes through a different version from each game, so there's really little need to bother with multiple artworks. However the Tekken 2 version is the only one to appear in secondary media that I know of (the Tekken anime movie). It seems the most "iconic" as a result. Thoughts?--Kung Fu Man (talk) 01:23, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
