Talk:Mormonism

Semi-protected edit request on 15 August 2024 (2)

The name of the church is Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Calling us by another name is disrespect to our religion and what we believe god wants us too do. Mormon is a nickname, and one the church won’t support. So please please change any references to a nonexistent made up organization called Mormon, to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Please. I don’t want to be rude, but I need to make my point. I am sorry if this offends you. If you want to know why we care, look up president Russell M. Nelson, correct name of the church. You should be able to pull up his talk. 205.185.99.241 (talk) 06:39, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: The two are not the same thing. Mormonism encompasses more than simply the LDS church, and the common name for the religion itself (not the church) is Mormonism. You may instead have been looking for the article The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tollens (talk) 06:52, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but all people who are members of this religion have been instructed to call themselves members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In fact, it was never called the Mormon church, and just because non-members call us that doesn’t make the name right. God told Joseph Smith to call the church, in the name of the lord, and years and years later God has commanded us through prophet Russell M. Nelson to use the correct name of our church and religion. Because our religion's purpose is to follow the commandments of and serve Jesus Christ, not to follow Mormon. We try to follow God, follow the doctrine of Jesus Christ, and serve others. We use the Book of Mormon as a tool to teach others and to increase our own understanding, but we also use the Bible and listen to the new commandments of God that are spoken through president Nelson. Once again just because most non-members call us Mormons doesn’t make that the name of our religion. The name of both the church and our religion is Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mormon is a name that people made up for us. 205.185.99.241 (talk) 17:15, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's simply incorrect. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been instructed to call themselves members of the church. There are people who follow this theology without being members of the church, for example Mormon fundamentalists. The article at no point refers to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the "Mormon church". Tollens (talk) 22:07, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but fundamentalists don’t follow the gospel of Mormon. The follow the gospel of Christ
3rd Nephi 27:8
And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel.
That is Jesus himself speaking to his disciples. I understand that you are saying that fundamentalists have not been instructed to call the church by it’s only correct name. But
the reason it’s so important to members of the church is that the gospel of our religion comes directly from Christ. If we’re Mormons than our church is Mormons church. But we’re members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints . Or maybe we aren’t members but apply the same principles to our lives. Either way, we’re disciples of Christ and followers of god. Not Mormon. Every word of our name comes from Jesus Christ. Not Mormon. 205.185.99.241 (talk) 07:05, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not, and have never been, talking about the name of the church at all. The name of the church is not even relevant to this article. The article only refers to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This article is not about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This article is about Mormonism. If you don't think the religious tradition (not the church, which has nothing to do with this) is not to be called Mormonism, what would it possibly be called?
