Basic definition needs clarification
I would encourage the original poster to consider revising the sentence, "It was a prophetic movement that called for a reliance on the spontaneity of the Holy Spirit and a more conservative personal ethic."
There are two problems that I see with this sentence: 1. It uses a comparative, while the object of comparison is absent and the implied comparison is unclear. i.e. "More conservative" than what? 2. The word conservative should be struck and replaced with a qualifier more relevant to 2nd century CE. The word 'conservative' is a colloquial term, the meaning of which differs significantly from culture to culture, not to mention from century to century.
I recommend striking the entire second clause of the sentence, or replacing it with something like, " . . . and ecstatic prophecy or other methods of subjective experience." This would be more consistent with the remainder of the article, since the word 'conservative' never again appears in the article for clarification of meaning. Alternatively, a section to clarify just how early adherents of Montanism were conservative would also satisfy point 2. --Samueljlawson (talk) 13:53, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Aftermath
The Aftermath section contains this line:
In 2016, Baptist Pastor and Polemicist J.D. Hall compared the Montanists to the Charismatic Movement and modern claims of prophecy. [26]
The source for this is a self-published youtube video by the the subject itself (JD Hall). After a bit of googling it seems like Hall is not a particularly notable commentator. For these reasons I believe the line should be removed. Please comment if you feel it should stay. Ashmoo (talk) 10:51, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
Ordination of women
In the source of this claim Epiphanius is quoted but the reference is not to his chapter on montanism but to a different sect, the quintillianists. Could someone please edit it accordingly? I am new on wiki and dont know how to best correct this error.
- It's not an error. Epiphanius identifies the Quintillianists as a subset of the Phyrgians. "Phrygians" is another name for Montanists, as the article makes clear. However, we need a reliable secondary source for this claim rather than only a primary source. Ltwin (talk) 23:51, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
New source article
I'm failing to integrate
Mitchell, Stephen. "An Apostle to Ankara from the New Jerusalem: Montanists and Jews in Late Roman Asia Minor." Scripta Classica Israelica 24 (2005): 207-223.
as a reference at the end of the penultimate paragraph of the History section. It discusses Justinian's suppression of the sect. Help please! Ender's Shadow Snr (talk) 01:01, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Ender's Shadow Snr, do you need help formatting the reference? Ltwin (talk) 18:09, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Ender's Shadow Snr: you need to add the following reference template to the Bibliography section:
* {{cite journal | last = Mitchell | first = Stephen | title = An Apostle to Ankara from the New Jerusalem: Montanists and Jews in Late Roman Asia Minor | journal = Scripta Classica Israelica | volume = 24 | pages = 207–223 | date = 2005}}
- Then you need to add a footnote at the end of the paragraph:
{{Sfn|Mitchell|2005|p= }}
. You should note the specific page or pages in the article where you got the information from. I have gone ahead and done this for you. In the future, you can find more reference templates at Wikipedia:Citation templates. Ltwin (talk) 18:22, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
- Really helpful, thank you. I've always failed to engage with the Wikipedia reference system despite 1000 edits. Time I did better, and your example is exactly what I need for the future Ender's Shadow Snr (talk) 12:40, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
