A Maori monolingual dictionary states that the word comes from the god Tāne.[1]^{: 29, 30, 220} Some sources state that the same word is used for the seaweed Durvillaea antarctica, of which the flute may be made, [2] and fernroot.[3]^{: 29, 30, 220}[4] HLHJ (talk) 04:25, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
