The article implies there is one patch. The first image shows it between America and Hawaii. However, the diagram here by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows three patches: this Eastern Garbage Patch or North Pacific Subtropical High, as well as a Western Garbage Patch much closer to Japan and Taiwan, and a more diffuse patch in the Subtropical Convergence Zone.
