Talk:George Hamilton, 1st Earl of Orkney

Douglas-Hamilton/Hamilton

If anyone is confused as to the naming of the offspring of Anne Duchess of Hamilton, and William, Earl of Selkirk, I suggest visiting Lennoxlove House. There, on the main staircase, are contemporary portraits of all of the male offspring of that union, including "Lord George Douglas-Hamilton" The frames, which were specifically made at the time for the paintings, all clearly bear the surname Douglas-Hamilton. If specific Douglas-Hamiltons chose to shorten their names for brevity's sake, or others chose to call them by one or other of the compound surname, that does not alter the fact that they were still Douglas-Hamiltons. The only true unadorned Hamiltons of this family were the oldest brothers, as Duke of Hamilton. Brendandh 11:17, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A contemporary of the same name

One source (Woodard, Colin (2007). The Republic of Pirates. Harcourt, Inc. p. 102. ISBN 978-0-15-101302-9.) asserts that the Earl "was deeply involved in plans for a military uprising in support of James Stuart" and that "at least two of [his/his brother's] nephews were also involved". I would add this to the article, only the source does not elaborate nor provide a date when these plans were drawn up. AlphaMikeOmega (talk) 18:05, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind: Woodard muddled two George Hamiltons, according to another source (Brooks, Baylus C. (2017). Quest for Blackbeard. Lake City, Florida: Lulu Press. ISBN 978-1-365-79592-3. Woodard assumes the wrong George Hamilton as Archibald Hamilton's brother). AlphaMikeOmega (talk) 18:54, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
A short biography of his Jacobite contemporary of the same name is available (Abernethy, Jack (2004). "HAMILTON, GEORGE [SSNE 8264]". The Scotland, Scandinavia and Northern European Biographical Database (SSNE). University of St Andrews. Retrieved 2021-11-12.). It states that his contemporary died decades earlier, in 1715.
