Redirect location
@Toddst1: I changed the redirect location (like RRS Boaty McBoatface), since this talks about the ship type specifically, rather than the owner/operator. Elisfkc (talk) 17:04, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- I thought about doing that but it's a double redirect to Royal Research Ship. Directing it to Royal Research Ship may be better. WDYT? Toddst1 (talk) 19:35, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Toddst1: That's what I did do, I guess I wasn't clear. I had also given RRS Boaty McBoatface the same exact redirect. Elisfkc (talk) 22:48, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Boat or ship?
I've added that Boaty McBoatface is the lead boat of its class, which consists of three similar vessels. Is "boat" the correct term to use for a submarine? Mgs2804 (talk) 19:34, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- It is properly classed as an autonomous underwater vehicle, a robot that travels underwater without requiring input from an operator. Baldwin Clere (talk) 08:35, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Boat is conventional in the UK. Discussing Astute Class submarines, Royal Navy says "a further two boats ... are under construction" ("Astute Class". Royal Navy. Retrieved 16 September 2024.) --Northernhenge (talk) 09:59, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
Autonomous underwater vehicle
Boaty McBoarface is not a remotely controlled submersible. It is classed as a new type of autonomous underwater vehicle which the makers are calling an Autosub Long Range[1], because it is programmed to act independently of its mothership over long periods of time, without requiring any external input after deployment. There is an audio explanation here. Baldwin Clere (talk) 11:37, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Parky McParkface
Parky McParkface was suggested as a name for a new city park in Sunnyvale, California.[1] As the name was rejected I don't think it's worthwhile to add to this article's Similar incidents section. It looks like this is not the only Parky McParkface attempts.[2] --Marc Kupper|talk 22:02, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Software
Duntz Development has developed new facial recognition algorithms, packaged as "Facey McFaceFace" 2600:1700:5FA1:61B0:1585:F1A6:DBA3:CF94 (talk) 02:57, 4 July 2020 (UTC)(ban me now)
Similar names section
Does anyone object to me tidying up the section? I think it has become excessively long and cumbersome with examples and it doesn’t seem to contain encyclopedic-quality information. I plan to reduce the examples to only the most relevant ones and write a summary of how the name spurred several similarly named things. 2601:587:200:4690:F47F:E83A:16CB:B7A2 (talk) 13:24, 11 November 2020 (UTC)
- It's certainly not the worst example farm I've ver seen, at least everything is sourced, but I would tend to agree that it could be trimmed down. There's even a few things that didn't end up getting named "<thing>y Mc<thing>face, those could probably go. Beeblebrox (talk) 07:54, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
- Agree it's getting towards WP:TRIVIA, and even though it's not the worst, that doesn't make it right. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:11, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- I've added a cleanup section tag, and anything that wasn't named that way should be removed. And highly questionable whether the Formula E car was actually named Electro McElectroFace. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:21, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
- Would it be more appropriate to separate that into an article dedicated to "McBoatfacing"?174.20.181.215 (talk) 01:55, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

100% agree. That section was nothing but semi-related WP:TRIVIA The section adds nothing to this article and per the prevailing sentiment here, I'm removing it and creating a separate article, List of Mcface spoofs. Note that Watergate scandal doesn't include Deflategate and the rest. They're in List of "-gate" scandals and controversies. Toddst1 (talk) 02:38, 25 September 2021 (UTC)
Names of the other two robotic sub vessels?
This BBC report 'Sir David Attenborough polar ship makes her London debut' suggests 'some' rather than one of the three robotic subs are called Boaty McBoatface, but that can't be right, surely? Surely they need to have unique names to avoid confusion? What are the names of the other two?81.131.173.194 (talk) 08:55, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- This page makes it clear that indeed, only one of the subs has this name. I can only assume that in the case of the BBC article, the person who wrote the image captions (often not the same as the article's author) managed to somehow confuse themselves. Funnily enough, I've been unable to figure out what the companion subs are actually called, so more than likely it's something not very spectacular... AngryHarpytalk 09:05, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
She/it
A recent edit changed some, but not all, feminine pronouns to neuter forms. MOS:SHIP says"Ships may be referred to using either neuter forms ("it", "its") or feminine forms ("she", "her", "hers"). Either usage is acceptable, but each article should be internally consistent and employ one or the other exclusively. As with all optional styles, articles should not be changed from one style to another unless there is a substantial reason to do so." I've therefore reverted the edit based on (a) internal consistency, and (b) no "substantial reason" to change. I have no wider view on feminine vs neuter for submarines. Maybe a significant majority of reliable sources could provide a substantial reason either way, especially for research submersibles.--Northernhenge (talk) 09:47, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
Inspiration: Craig Fergusons show?
https://you tu.be/Bknt00olZ0Q?t=1064 2014, on the last late late show with Craig Ferguson, a new character is being introduced and named 'Pipy McPiperson'. Did the creator of Boaty McBoatface remember Pipy? 2A04:4540:6E0F:2B00:518B:49C:DD54:B7A1 (talk) 18:10, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
