Talk:Beaufort County School District

Why there is emphasis on MCAS Beaufort

FYI the US Census Bureau does not consider the on-base property of MCAS Beaufort to be actually in the Beaufort County School District

Instead the district text list states for the elementary level: "Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station School District" (ELM 00006) ... in other words, DoDEA. For the secondary level, because the base contracts with BCSD, it does have this entry: "Beaufort County School District within Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station" (in other words, the base sends the HS students to BCSD) with a separate ID number, SEC 45013. Off-base property is marked as BCSD, UNI 01110 (UNI Meaning unified PK-12).

Interestingly the map marks Parris Island with UNI 01110 (BCSD).

People on base of course don't directly pay property taxes to BCSD, and taxation is a big aspect of school district governance. Because the Census Bureau doesn't consider the base to actually be in BCSD, it's necessary to spend the energy to explain the situation, while this is not the case for off-base parts of the county. The county government map viewer does show MCAS Beaufort properties to be in various school board districts WhisperToMe (talk) 16:08, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if there were contractors' children living in permanent housing at MCAS Beaufort, then there's no information on which elementary school would take them (since the elementary school zoning is "on base" = DoDEA) WhisperToMe (talk) 18:53, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I found in regards to a base in Massachusetts that the dependents of active duty military are sent to one high school but high school students not in that category are sent to a different high school. This might explain the school zoning situation at MCAS Beaufort, with dependents of active duty military being sent to DoDEA K-8 and those of contractors being sent to BCSD.
