This article glaring does not mention the location of the battle! According to Google books - http://books.google.com/books?id=9CsOAAAAQAAJ&pg=RA1-PA197&lpg=RA1-PA197&ots=WJDKmf14f5&dq=rat+island+basin - the action took place somewhere in the region of the dutch east indies.
