Talk:847 Naval Air Squadron

Re: "3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron" redirects here

3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron co-existed (in time) with 847 Naval Air Squadron from 1968 until 1995 [1], which makes this page a bit awkward to try and edit. For example, 3CBAS had the entire Squadron in the Falkands (9 Gazelle and 6 Scout) [[2]] but this article only mentions 847 Naval Air Squadron operating 24 Westland Wessex. This is perhaps understandable because, at the time, 3CBAS was a completely separate unit. Would it not be better to create a separate article for 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron? --Bye for now (talk) 14:23, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Dreddmoto: @Phd8511: @Nigel Ish: @Lestermay: as recent content contributors to this article, I would appreciate your input on my dilemma. I have made a start on a draft for a 3 Commando Brigade Air Squadron here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bye_for_now/sandbox - Should I try to merge this info (and anything else I find) into the 847 Naval Air Squadron page? --Bye for now (talk) 21:10, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Gone ahead and made the changes. Can always be reverted if if turns out to have been a bad idea. --Bye for now (talk) 12:08, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Bye for now:, this is a good idea. From what I have seen, 3CBAS was a different unit and unlike 847 NAS, not part of the Fleet Air Arm. In that case, it would be logical to have a separate article for that unit. Considering your draft here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Commando_Brigade_Air_Squadron , there is enough material there to produce a significant article. It would be worth adjusting the wording in the introduction of the 847 NAS article, just to say that 847 was re-formed from 3CBAS, rather than being previously known as.

You could also use the photographs there in other, relevant articles. Other possibilities include merging the article with the 3 Commando Brigade article or, adding a brief mention and link to it, in the History section of the Royal Marines article; as well as the 3 Commando Brigade and History of the Royal Marines articles. You could also do that in the Commando Helicopter Force article. Dreddmoto (talk) 14:25, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for that. I still need to do a fair bit of work on the 3CBAS article but, when that's in better shape, I'll come back to your other suggestions/ideas, --Bye for now (talk) 16:23, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article mentions nothing of the squadron's involvement in the early stages of operation Telic as described by Lieutenant Commander James Newton DFC in his book 'Armed Action' Headline Publishing Group , 2007 ISBN 978 0 7553 1601 4.
