Shouldn’t the list of defenders include British troops who were reportedly (according to cnn) at the scene of the attack? Lucycobra (talk) 22:22, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was not n evacuation, it was a withdrawal out of the country, and a catastrophic one at that. Let's add some context, this wasnt just an attack...nor was it anywhere close to an evacuation. 99.192.109.101 (talk) 14:39, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
America/US and UK troops withdrew from Afghanistan, the Afghan civilians who had aided them, or who for other reasons were in danger, were evacuated (ie were moved to a place of greater safety). It wouldn't make much sense to say Afghan civilians withdrew from their own country! Pincrete (talk) 06:45, 18 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Inconsistent Death Toll Numbers
in the beginning of the article, it states that at least 183 people were killed, with 170 Afghani civilians and 13 US military service members killed but, under the "Victims" section, it says 182 killed, 169 Afghani citizens and 13 US military service members killed. Robbie.1075 (talk) 16:36, 2 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Robbie.1075, the highest sourced figure is the 182 (lower) figure. As we and the sources both say that the real figure could be higher (we say 'at least'), I've restored the lower figure. What may have happened is that someone edited the article because they read of an extra death, but didn't replace the 'cite' to confirm the figure. If someone finds a more up to date figure with a more up to date cite, they can easily update the numbers.Pincrete (talk) 04:30, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've just been looking to see if a better/more final death figure exists for the Afghan victims, there doesn't appear to be one. All the other figures are lower and appear to be part of the 'unfolding narrative' at the time of the event itself. It's possible that in the chaos of the evacuation, no final summary figure was arrived at in Western media.Pincrete (talk) 06:30, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
President Donald Trump has just announced yesterday during his 2025 Joint Session Speech that the United States has apprehended a “top terrorist” involved in the Abbey gate bombing, listed as one out of two masterminds, and was appending in an Alexandria, Virginia federal court after being flown from Pakistan. He was identified as Mohammed Sharifullah (or nicknamed "Jafar"), but unfortunately this has nothing to do with the cricket player with the same name (some websites I've recently searched placed the cricket player's date-of-birth and not the terrorist's exact date-of-birth). Since this story was just brand spanking new, there's not even a single part of headline about his age, backstory, and life before him joining the ISIS-K in 2016. However, he was arrested in 2019, but managed to get out of prison in a jailbreak by the Taliban during their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 shortly before the attacks.
The DOJ further said that after Sharifullah’s release, an ISIS-K member contacted him to seek his assistance in a planned attack in Kabul. “On June 20, 2016, a suicide bomber acting for ISIS-K detonated a bomb that killed over ten embassy guards and multiple civilians and wounded other soldiers guarding the Canadian embassy in Kabul. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack,” the DOJ statement says. The criminal complaint alleged that prior to this attack, Sharifullah conducted surveillance to prepare the suicide bomber and later transported the bomber to the area where the attack took place. During his interview with the FBI, Sharifullah also allegedly admitted that, on behalf of ISIS-K, he had shared instructions on how to use AK-style rifles and other weapons with attackers who were behind an attack on Crocus City Hall in the Russian capital that killed nearly 130 people and injured several others.
