Sergio Raul Torres (born 8 November 1983) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays for Crawley Town. He was signed from Peterborough United in July 2010. He holds an Italian passport, since his grandmother was Italian.[2] He has previously played in his Argentian homeland, and for Basingstoke Town and Wycombe Wanderers.
Playing career
He began his career at Argentine minnows Banfield de Mar del Plata, but after two seasons he decided to leave the club. He funded his own trip to England in 2004 with the aim of impressing Brighton & Hove Albion during a two week trial.[2] Although Albion showed no more interest, he signed for non-league Molesey before moving on to Basingstoke Town later that year.[2] While at Basingstoke, Torres worked at Boots, stacking shelves in order to earn a living, and cycled to work.[2][3]
In July 2005 Basingstoke Town played a pre-season friendly match against Wycombe Wanderers, during which Torres impressed then manager John Gorman and was offered a two-year contract.[2]
Torres made his debut for Wycombe Wanderers a few weeks into the 2005–06 season and scored his first goal for the club in the 2–0 victory over Notts County in January 2006.[citation needed] However he was then only able to make 49 first-team appearances due to injuries.[citation needed] This meant he missed all but two matches in Wycombe's run to the League Cup semi-final.[citation needed]
Torres, who had signed a contract lasting until 2010 at Adams Park, was voted the 76th best player outside the Premier League by FourFourTwo magazine.[citation needed]
In July 2008, Torres was signed by Peterborough United for a fee reported to be in excess of £100,000,[4] thereby moving up a division to League One. He scored his first Peterborough goal on 3 March 2009 in a crucial 3–2 win against Leyton Orient, putting Peterborough 2–0 at the time in 12 minutes.[citation needed]
He was transfer listed by the club following their promotion to the Championship[5] and subsequently joined Lincoln City on a one-month loan on 17 September 2009.[6] On 28 October 2009 Torres signed for Lincoln until January. He was transfer listed again by Peterborough at the end of the 2009–10 season.[7] In July 2010, Torres joined Crawley Town on a two-year contract. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but BBC Sport suggested that it was around £100,000.[8][9] On 10 January 2011, Torres scored a 90th minute winner for Crawley against Championship club Derby County in the third round of the FA Cup.
