The Rockville Stone Chapel was built by the members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, with construction beginning on October 3, 1856 and dedication the following February (1856). The members had come up with the idea in 1855. It has been described as follows: "A tiny rock-walled church among great brooding trees that spread green arms around it and raise still heads above it as though in wordless prayer.”
After a decline in membership following the Civil War, and the inability of the reduced numbers to properly maintain the building, the chapel was donated in 1929 to Solano County in the hope that the county could restore and maintain it.
The Great Depression of the 1930s delayed the work. In 1940, sponsorship by the Board of Supervisors and materials and labor from the W.P.A., the chapel was restored and rededicated on Memorial Day, 1940. It continues to be actively used to this day (2019).
The chapel is California Historical Landmark #779.[1]
