Xubuntu (IPA: /ˈzùbúntú/) is an official derivative of the Ubuntu open source operating system, using the Xfce desktop environment. Xubuntu is intended for use on less-powerful computers or those who seek a highly efficient desktop environment on faster systems, and uses mostly GTK+ applications.

History

Xubuntu was originally rumored to release alongside Breezy Badger (5.10) versions of the Ubuntu line, but an official release date was not decided upon, although the Xubuntu name was used to brand a metapackage (xubuntu-desktop) which would install a XFCE desktop. The first official Xubuntu release was released alongside the Ubuntu 6.06 line (including Kubuntu, and Edubuntu) code named Dapper Drake, on June 1, 2006.

Similar project

A project similar to Xubuntu is Ubuntu Lite. It also aims to have a lightweight desktop, but completes the task with IceWM as opposed to Xfce.
