Thanks for the High Country News note. I would not have known about this if you hadn't told me. The river was unusually high that day, and the sky was perfect, not all blue and not all gray. I've never floated the John Day, but my next-door neighbor has taken many trips on the stretches between Service Creek, Clarno, and take-out places below that.
