Qana (33°12′33″N 35°17′57″E / 33.20917°N 35.29917°EInvalid arguments have been passed to the {{#coordinates:}} function; Template:Lang-ar) is a village in Southern Lebanon located 10 km southeast of the city of Tyre and 12 km north of the border with Israel. It is suggested by some to have been the location of ancient Cana, where, according to John 2:1-11, Jesus performed his first miracle of turning water into wine. However, most scholars think that Cana was close to Nazareth and have identified three possible villages in that area.
Qana is mainly known for two separate incidents in which the Israeli Defense Forces caused many civilian deaths during fighting with Hezbollah.
- 1996 shelling of Qana: On 18 April 1996, amid heavy fighting between the Israeli Defense Forces and Hezbollah during "Operation Grapes of Wrath", a Fijian UNIFIL compound in the village was shelled by Israeli artillery, killing 106 civilians and injuring around 116 others who had taken refuge there to escape the fighting. Four UNIFIL soldiers were also seriously injured [1][2].
- 2006 Qana airstrike: On 30 July 2006, during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, Israeli airstrikes hit an apartment building. It collapsed, killing 57 people (including 37 children) and injuring many others.[3].Red Cross publishes that 28 corpses evacuated from Qana, contrary to Lebanese reports that 57 people were killed[4].
