Valen Low (Chinese: 卢威麟; pinyin: Lú Wēi Lín; born 14 January 1994) is a professional armwrestler from Singapore.[1] Valen competes regionally and mostly in Malaysia. Valen's biggest armwrestling achievement to date is winning the 2014 FitX Armwrestling Cup in Australia, Melbourne and clinching 1st and 2nd place, both right and left handed respectively, in the Asia Armwrestling Championships 2014. Valen is the head of the only armwrestling club in Singapore named Singapore Armwrestling. Valen's success in the sport of armwrestling is greatly attributed by training with the Singapore Armwrestling Team. The main members that train with him are: Desmond Lau Chee Loong, Tay Jia Jun(Tee Jun), Melvyn Loh Hao Jie, Gregory Yeo Yi Chen, Wilson Koh, Jeffrey Phooi Eng Shen and Dave Hum Yien How.[2]
Biography
Valen Low started armwrestling in secondary school at 13 years of age as a test of strength with his friends. Valen armwrestled from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 and developed a passion for armwrestling in Whitley Secondary School.[3][4] He is currently studying in Republic Polytechnic majoring in Health Management and Promotion. He plans to compete in the annual World Armwrestling Championship in the future sanctioned under the World Armwrestling Federation.
During Valen's secondary school days, he was mocked and laughed at due to his passion for the sport of armwrestling. Mr Valen Low's teachers even described his endeavours as 'useless, a waste of time, nothing to achieve'. His form teacher tried to ban him from armwrestling. However he did not give up from these setbacks and devoted his time to train for armwrestling.[2][3][4]
After Valen's O-level examinations in late 2010, he travelled to Malaysia to compete in his first arm wrestling competition in Malaysia, Malacca. He was knocked out in the quarter finals in the men's open, over 85 kg category. In 2011, he competed in the junior category in Malaysia and got first multiple times. During his time in 2012, he competed in the men's middle weight category and got first place ever since.[5] He was enraged and disappointed by what Ms David, his form teacher said. Valen was a deviance in the eyes of society, however it proved to be a positive deviance. Hence, he decided to train harder for the sport, so that he could prove his success through armwrestling.[6] During his stint from 2011 to 2012 he had won multiple Malaysia national titles. In 2013, he also competed with Jian Jikan, Indonesia's Number 1 middleweight arm wrestler, in an arm wrestling supermatch, and Valen came out victorious with a score of 4–1.[7] In late 2013, he defeated Malaysia's number 1 middleweight arm wrestler, Joffey Jolly, to attain the number 1 spot in the Singapore/Malaysia arm wrestling rankings. Valen is currently ranked number 1 in the 75–85 kg weight class in Singapore/Malaysia.[7]
Armwrestling Career Highlights
FitX Armwrestling Cup 2014
In early 2014 Valen won the Shin Min armwrestling challenge, which was held in Singapore and received prize money of $1000 to help fund his trip in the upcoming FitX Armwrestling Cup.[3][4] Valen was invited by the Australian Armwrestling Federation (AAF) and travelled to Australia, Melbourne in March 2014 to compete in the prestigious FitX Armwrestling Cup during the FitX Sport & Fitness Expo. This competition was Southeast Asia's and Oceania's biggest arm wrestling competition. Valen and a fellow Singaporean, Melvyn Loh Hao Jie, competed in the under 80 kg category. Valen Low won in his weight class and emerged as the champion of the senior under 80 kg category. He was ranked 1st out of the other 7 competitors which range from Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. After the FitX Armwrestling Cup 2014, Valen Low was being ranked number 1 and teammate/Singaporean, Melvyn Loh was being ranked number 2 in the under 80 kg weight class in Oceania.[8]
Asia Armwrestling Championships 2014
In June 2014, Valen Low, and fellow Singaporean, Desmond Lau self-funded and competed in the 13th edition of the Asian Armwrestling Championships in Sendai, Japan from 27 to 29 June 2014. Valen competed in the under 21 years, 65 kg-70 kg class both left and right handed. He emerged as the champion for the right hand category and got 1st runner up for the left hand category. This is Valen's biggest armwrestling achievement thus far and no other Singaporean has ever achieved this in the sport of armwrestling.[9][10]
Pattaya International Armwrestling Championships 2014
Both the Singapore armwrestlers, Valen Low and Tay Jia Jun competed in the Pattaya International Armwrestling Championships on the 6th of September 2014. There were more than 50 competitors in each category from various countries such as Kazakhstan, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea and host country, Thailand. There were 3 different weight divisions ranging from under 75 kg, 85 kg and 85 kg+. Valen Low achieved 2nd runner-up in the senior under 75 kg category by beating Russia's Dmitry Motorin who was 1st runner-up in the Moscow Championships 2013 in the under 75 kg division[11] and 8th place right hand under 70 kg in the highly regarded A1 Russian Open 2013.[12] He also achieved 6th position in the under 85 kg category and fellow Singaporean, Tay Jia Jun attained 5th position in the senior under 85 kg category.[13]
Powerlifting - Bench Press
Other than armwrestling, Mr Low also competed in raw powerlifting in Singapore. His forte is the bench press. For the 2013 Singapore Powerlifting Open, he bench pressed 131 kg at a body weight of 80 kg. He was ranked 2nd for the bench press in the under 83 kg weight class.[14] His personal best for the bench press as of 2014 was 150 kg at a body weight of 77 kg. His personal best as of August 2014 was 142.5 kg at a body weight of 74 kg. Valen Low competed in an unofficial push-pull meet on 27th December 2014, and bench pressed 147.5 kg at a body weight of 72.6 kg, pressing more than 2 times his body weight. He plans to set national records for the bench press in the future.[15]
It's not that the students are incapable. It's that their abilities are dormant and it's up to the educators to draw out that potential.
Media
In October 2014, MediaCorp Channel 5 aired the television series Secret Singapore which featured Valen Low and his Armwrestling Team. It showcased the sport of Armwrestling in Singapore and this was the first time Valen was aired on national television.[17] On 9 December 2014, he made another media appearance. This time he was being featured on Channel NewsAsia, Singapore Tonight news section. Channel NewsAsia described Valen Low as 'Singapore youths making waves in niche sports', stating that he has been making waves in overseas competitions such as the FitX Armwrestling Cup 2014 and the Asia Armwrestling Championships 2014. The news also illustrated the challenges he had to overcome in respect to his Armwrestling endeavors, which mainly included funding.[18]
