The sixth season of Glee was commissioned on April 19, 2013, along with the fifth season, as part of a two-season renewal deal for the show.[3] It is announced that sixth season is going to be the final season of the show.[4]

It will begin airing on Fox in early 2015. [5]

Production

On April 19, 2013, Fox renewed Glee for a fifth and a sixth season, as part of a two-season renewal deal for the show.[3] On October 17, 2013, Ryan Murphy announced that season six will be the show's last, and later that it wouldn't be New York-centric.[4] Season six is expected to premiere in 2015 as part of the 2014–15 television season.[6]

Fox Chairman Kevin Reilly announced in May 2014 that the show would not begin its final season in the fall of 2014 but sometime in 2015.[5] According to Murphy, there will be a time jump between the season five finale and the season six premiere. Sometime during the sixth season, we will catch up with the younger McKinley High students who did not graduate in the fifth season.[4]

This season, the show will follow New Directions’ original star member Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), as she takes the next steps in her career, focusing on the bright future ahead for this talented glee club alumnus.[7] It is later confirmed that Rachel will be coming home to Lima to relaunch the New Directions.[8] On July 10 it was confirmed season 6 will consist of 13 episodes, which are planned to be aired consecutively.[9]

Cast

On July 7, 2014 was announced that Naya Rivera, who plays Santana Lopez, is set to return for season 6, but as a recurring cast member.[10] On August 27, it was confirmed that Dot-Marie Jones was promoted to series regular along with Amber Riley retaining her series regular status for the final season.[11] Five new characters are set to be introduced in season 6. Roderick, a shy guy with a good voice like Otis Redding; Spencer, a football player who just happens to be gay and won't be messed with because of his sexuality; Jane, an ambitious girl who'd rather be a Warbler than a member of New Directions; and twins Mason and Madison, both cheerios who are extremely weird and really positive.[12]
