List of episodes

On May 10, 2013, Modern Family was renewed for a fifth season.[1] The first episode, "Suddenly Last Summer", which premiered on September 25, 2013, on ABC, made reference to the newly legalized same-sex marriage in California. The writers said that a wedding for Mitch and Cam was a "real possibility".[2] In January 2014, it was announced that Modern Family's vacation episode would take place in Australia this season.[3]

Reviews for season five have been mixed.[4]

Cast

Modern Family employs an ensemble cast. The series focuses on Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), his daughter Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), and his son Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) who live in Los Angeles. Claire is a homemaker married to Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell); they have three children, Haley (Sarah Hyland), a young adult concerned most with popularity and boys,[5] Alex (Ariel Winter), the smart middle child,[6] and Luke (Nolan Gould), the offbeat only son.[7] Jay is married to a much younger Colombian woman, Gloria (Sofía Vergara), and is helping her raise her teen son, Manny (Rico Rodriguez). Mitchell and his partner Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) have adopted a Vietnamese baby, Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons).

Reception

Reviews

The fifth season of Modern Family has received mixed reviews, with the second half of the season being praised more than the first. Whilst episodes such as "Larry's Wife", "And One to Grow On" and "Sleeper" have been generally negatively received by critics, other episodes like "Suddenly, Last Summer", "First Days", "The Old Man & the Tree", "Three Dinners", "Spring-a-Ding-Fling", "Other People's Children", "Las Vegas" and "Message Received" were received highly positively, with the latter two frequently labelled as two of the best episodes of the show's entire run. [30] [31]

In one of the publication's most negative reviews of a Modern Family episode yet, Matthew Wolfson of Slant Magazine writes that the show "appears to have finally arrived at the depressing and predictable low point toward which it's been trending for the past two years" whilst reviewing the opening episodes. He also went on to say that the show had "turned into a shrill pastiche of stereotypical characterizations and superficial banter lacking both feeling and wit", giving it a star rating of 1.5/4.[32] Different writers for The A.V. Club rated, in total, a majority of the season's former-half episodes with a "B-" grade or less. One writer for the magazine, Joshua Alston, gave "ClosetCon '13" a "C+" and remarked that "Modern Family becomes a high-wire act when it separates its characters into three storylines with no overlap between them."[33] However, he has since awarded three episode in the show's second half an "A-" or higher, signalling an increase in quality.

Along with the mixed reception for the season, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons's performance as Lily has received positive reviews. In his review of "The Help", Joe Reid, writing for The A.V. Club, called Lily a "veritable one-liner machine".[34] Reviewing the same episode, Leigh Raines of TV Fanatic said that the funniest part of the half-hour was "Lily at the end rolling her eyes and banging her head on the table listening to Cam, Mitchell and Pepper arguing over wedding plans".[35]

Several critics also agree that the second half of the season has, so far, seen a slight resurgence in quality. Episodes such as "Las Vegas", "Spring-a-Ding-Fling" and "Message Received" have received highly positive reviews from critics and fans alike. In his review for "Other People's Children", Joshua Alston from The A.V. Club stated that the episode "is a Modern Family episode that makes me suspect this show has been better and more consistent than many people, myself included, give it credit for. Not because it’s a superlative episode on its own merits, but because it suggests another narrative around how the show got from where it started to where it is."[36] He also rated the episodes before and after "Other People's Children" with an A- and an A, respectively.
