He is Singapore's most decorated armwrestler and is the head of the only armwrestling club in Singapore named Singapore Arm Wrestling.
Biography
Valen Low started armwrestling in secondary school at 13 years of age. He armwrestled from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4 and developed a strong and deep affection for armwrestling, which turned out to be his passion for the sport.[1]
He was so influential during his secondary school days that he created had an armwrestling league within his school, this led to many disagreements and comments from his teachers and peers. On one occasion, his form teacher, Ms Joann David, wanted to ban him from armwrestling commenting that it was 'useless', 'nothing to achieve' and a 'waste of time'.[2] However, he was deeply motivated by what Ms David said and decided to train harder for the sport, devoting much of his time to armwrestling.[3]
Valen was a late bloomer academically. He did not do well for his O-level scoring 32 points, having only passed English and Humanities; he went to ITE College Central to further his education. Which, after finishing his education at ITE college central, graduated with a GPA of 3.3 and went on to pursue his education at Republic Polytechnic majoring in Health Promotion and Management. This student who did not do well in his O levels, scored a GPA of 3.4 after his first semester and was the top 5% in his cohort. He once said this famous quote, "It's not that the students are incapable. It's that their abilities are dormant and it's up to the educators to draw out that potential." [4]
After his O-level examinations in late 2010, he travelled to Malaysia to compete in his first arm wrestling competition in Malaysia, Malacca. He was knocked out in the quarter finals of the above 85kg mens open category. In 2011, he competed in the junior category in Malaysia and got first. During his time in 2012, he competed in the men's middle weight category and got first place ever since.[2] During his stint from 2011 to 2012 he had won multiple Malaysia national titles. In 2013, he also competed with Jian Jikan, Indonesia's Number 1 middleweight arm wrestler, in an arm wrestling supermatch, and Valen came out victorious with 4-1. In the late 2013, he deafeated the Malaysia number 1 arm wrestler, Joffey Jolly, to attain the number 1 spot in the Singapore/Malaysia arm wrestling rankings. Valen is currently ranked number 1 in the 75-85kg weight class in Singapore/Malaysia. He won the Shin Min armwrestling challenge in 2014, which was held in Singapore and received prize money of $1000 to help fund his trip in the upcoming Fitx Armwrestling Cup.[1] Valen travelled to Australia, Melbourne in 2014 and was invited by the Australian Armwrestling Federation (AAF) to compete in the prestigious FitX Armwrestling Cup. This competition was Southeast Asia and Oceania's biggest arm wrestling competition. Valen and a fellow Sigaporean, Melvyn Loh, compete in the under 80kg category. Valen Low triumphed and got first place in his weight class, defeating fellow Singaporean Melvyn Loh. He was ranked 1st out of the other 8 competitors which range from Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. This is Valen's biggest achievement thus far.
