Michael David Dunn (born December 10, 1966) is an American arrested and tried in connection with the shooting death of Jordan Davis, which took place after he got into an argument with the high school student over loud music being played in the vehicle in which he was a passenger. The judge declared a mistrial on a charge of 1st degree murder, but Dunn was convicted of three counts of attempted murder for firing at three other teens who were with Davis on November 23, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida, and one count of firing a missile into a vehicle.[2]
Biography
Michael Dunn is a 47-year-old software developer, local to Jacksonville Florida.[3]
Shooting
On Friday, November 23, 2012, Dunn fatally shot 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis. Dunn allegedly got into an argument with Davis and three other teenagers outside a convenience store after he asked the group to turn down the music in their SUV.[4]
Dunn admitted he gunned down Davis in a dispute over loud music, but claims the shooting was in self-defense.[5] In a jail house recorded phone call Dunn said that he was attacked and was the victim: "I was the one that was being preyed upon and I fought back. It's not quite the same but it made me think of like the old TV shows and movies where like how the police used to think when a chick got raped going, 'Oh, it's her fault because of the way she dressed.' I'm like, 'So it's my fault (laughing) because I asked them to turn their music down. I got attacked and I fought back because I didn't want to be a victim and now I'm in trouble. I refused to be a victim and now I'm incarcerated." [2] Dunn testified that he only fired after seeing what he thought was the top 4 inches of the barrel of a shotgun in the passenger window, however, his fiance Rhonda Rouer testified that Dunn never told her about seeing a gun, barrel or stick that night, or the next day. [6]
According to Assistant State Attorney John Guy, speaking for the prosecution, Dunn initially fired three times into Jordan's door. A bullet landing in each of Jordan's legs while a third bullet traveled through his liver, lungs and aorta.[7] Guy said he kept focus and aimed at the car, firing four more times. Dunn fired a total of 10 shots, with 9 hitting the vehicle the teenagers were in. [3]
Jordan Davis Trial
Shortly after Davis's death, his parents hired attorney John Phillips to represent them in a wrongful death lawsuit against Dunn.[8] [9] The case was settled for an undisclosed amount in January 2014.[10]
On February 15, 2014, Dunn was convicted on three counts of attempted murder.[3] Dunn, who may face up to 75 years in prison, will be sentenced on March 24, 2014.
The jury could not reach an agreement on Dunn's first-degree murder charge and a mistrial was called. Florida state attorney Angela Corey stated that her office will seek a retrial for this charge.[11]
