The Hawiye (or Hawiya) is a Somali clan. The Hawiye live in central and southern Somalia, but also in smaller numbers in Kenya and Ethiopia. The Hawiye is desecendants from a common ancestor called Irir Samaale. The CIA, Human Rights Watch and other internationell organisations indicate that Hawiye is the majority clan in Somalia.


Hawiye Subclans

The biggest subclans of the Hawiye are the Gaalgade, the Hawadle, the Abgal, the Murosade'the Sheikal and the Habar Gedir.

  • Subclans of the Abgal are Wabudhan (Daoud, Rer Mattan, Mohamed Muse), Harti (Agonyar, Warsangeli and Abokor) and Waesli.
