== World championships. ==

This article only makes passing mention of Lawler being a former world champion. Meanwhile; articles about Flair, Bockwinkel, Hogan, Rhodes, Sting... all mention the number of times each has been a world champion. Since the World Class title is recognized as a world title (see Kerry Von Erich) it would be better if this article stated that Lawler is a four-time world heavyweight champion (one AWA, three World Class) as well as a two-time world-tag team champion (AWA) with Bill Dundee. I doubt anyone seriously believes his multiple reigns as USWA champion should count as world title reigns, but if Von Erich's reigns as World Class champion are counted, then the three times Lawler held that same title should also be counted. Quotes

That quote section is HUGE. Most of it should probably be moved to wikiquote, if kept at all. Drwarpmind 01:52, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Andy Kaufman

I find it curious that entire sections have been recently deleted including the famous Andy Kaufman incident on the David Letterman show - could the edit done on 21:55, 18 June 2007 Burntsauce have been done in error -- More than 1/2 of the content was deleted (Mconwell 06:08, 19 June 2007 (UTC))[reply]

The edit summary of Burntsauce's initial removal of the material make it clear that it wasn't an error, it was application of the Verifiability and Biographies of living persons policies. Find sources for it, then put it back in. Everything Burntsauce took out was unsourced. -- Jonel | Speak 06:59, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it should be that hard to find sources for the Andy Kaufman incident. [[Briguy52748 12:56, 19 June 2007 (UTC)]][reply]
I believe that User:Burntsauce is misapplying the WP:BLP guidelines which state that contentious uncited material should be removed. Is the deleted material contentious? It doesn't seem so to me. Future mass removals should be discussed on the talk pages, or at least reported to the Wikiproject:BLP page. Unilateral actual such as this is not acceptable. But, please do find references. Since Wikipedia is supposed to be an encyclopedia of some sort, I think the part about the Kaufman-Lawler "feud" needs to be changed. The way it is now it appears as if there actually was a feud, when in fact it was all staged and part of the whole build-up. Just brilliant wrestling, in other words. I don't think an encyclopedia is the right place to keep that joke alive (I know it's only funny cause people don't get it), but an encyclopeida should stick to that which is true: there was no feud. Not only was there no feud, but it also makes Lawler look like a bit of a pompous ass when in reality the whole ordeal was just brilliant. I see in the article that a citation is needed for the link that Kaufman and Lawler had some form of friendship: http://blogs.wvgazette.com/popcult/2008/03/18/jerry-the-king-lawler-the-popcult-interview/ He does not imply a close friendship but does say they had one. 22:01, 9 April 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.215.210.193 (talk)

Jerry Lawler wrote a book (I can't remember the title) in which he told the story of his "feud" with Andy Kaufman. The Letterman incident was indeed part of the act, but it happened rather spontaneously. The original plan was for them to apologize to each other. Before the show was taped, Kaufman casually remarked that it might make better television if they started fighting all over again. Thus, when they were actually on the show, Lawler refused to reconcile. Kaufman took the bait and fought back. In his book, Lawler confessed that he was surprised by the vehemence of Kaufman's reaction, and thought he had really upset him. He sought him out over the show to apologize. When he found him, Kaufman broke into a wide grin and said, "Well, what'd you think?"97.73.64.151 (talk) 19:40, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Parts of this section are copied verbatim from http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/Bios/lawler.html . The part about 'sending him to the hospital' is a giveaway.89.80.194.201 (talk) 20:47, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"midget"

Should the use of the word midget be replaced with dwarf in this article? Midget is considered an offensive term. --BrettxPW (talk) 23:47, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wikipedia does not subscribe to political correctness. The term "midget" is a recognized one in wrestling. Dwarf wrestling is even more offensive in this context because it is reminiscent of the term dwarf tossing. 68.146.41.232 (talk) 17:37, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that since wrestling promoters refer to said people as "midgets" it should be written that way herein. But I did have to comment on your claim that "wikipedia does not subscribe to political correctness"....BWAHAHAHA.

He met The Kat when?

This article states that he met Stacy "The Kat" Carter in 1989? That doesn't sound right? Is it supposed to be 1999? If anyone can verify the correct date, this should be corrected. Dahumorist (talk) 14:31, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MECW

I think we need an area about him working on MECW

Feud with Jim Carrey

This part is actually a publicity stunt.

Wikipedia text: "Between scenes Jim Carrey often remained in character as Andy Kaufman and at one point spit on Jerry, just as Kaufman had done in 1982. A 'stunned' Lawler reacted by grabbing Carrey by the hair and locked him in a sleeper hold and jerking his neck—supposedly sending Carrey to the hospital."

IMBD Sources (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0492476/bio): "Between scenes in Man on the Moon (1999) actor Jim Carrey remained in character as Andy Kaufman and spit on pro-wrestler Jerry Lawler, just as Kaufman did in 1982. A stunned Lawler reacted by grabbing Carrey by the hair and jerking his neck and sending him to the hospital. (This was later revealed to be a publicity stunt to promote the movie)." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anashel (talk • contribs) 05:53, 28 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Titles

The article says he has held 163 titles with no citation. Later in the personal life section, the source stating the rape charges were dropped claims over 200 titles (http://www.wrestleview.com/faq/?article=jerrylawler). A change might be needed. USWA and World Titles

the USWA was NOT a true world heavyweight championship. By the pro-wrestling standards world titles are only true world titles if they are defended over seas and the USWA was NEVER defended outside the US. Lawlers 23 reignes cannot count towards his number oof world title reigns — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.93.167.109 (talk) 19:47, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Undue weight (what else is new)

Of course it's bothersome that the article gives rather short shrift to his pre-WWF career. That's the case with far too many wrestler bios. I'm reminded of the legendary line Roddy Piper delivered on Portland Wrestling in 1983, "Are you ribbin' me, man???", when I see no mention of the empty arena match. I just found this on Dave Meltzer's Twitter feed: "Chael should have shown up Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay with Lance Russell, an Octagon and 11,300 empty seats."RadioKAOS (talk) 01:24, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The section on his heart attack is longer than 1983-1992. That's what's new. This week, anyway. (I took the liberty of Wikilinking Russell for you.) InedibleHulk (talk) 12:20, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jerry "The King" Lawler suffered a heart attack on Raw on Septemner 10, 2012. He collapsed on Raw and was rushed to the Hospital in Monteral. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.199.132.82 (talk) 02:53, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, no reliable source has yet confirmed the nature of his medical condition. He collapsed and is being treated; so far, that's really all we know. Let's try to stick to what's officially confirmed. --BRPierce (talk) 03:00, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are updates provided on-air allowed to be added, or no since there's no written web page to refer to? Example (below contains previously entered info plus some additional updates):

On September 10, 2012, Lawler collapsed during a WWE Raw show in Montreal, where he would be moved to a medical facility after being revived by medical staff backstage. Updates were provided during the live broadcast by commentator Michael Cole. As of 22:50 EDT, it was announced that he had received CPR, but was breathing independently and reacting to stimulus. — George Steinmetz (talk • contribs) 03:06, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scratch that; WWE posted an update. — George Steinmetz (talk • contribs) 03:10, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference, until such time as written references are available, on a breaking item, you can generally use a reference to the on-air updates, so long as you say so in the reference tag and specify show title (or network in the case of news channel coverage), date, and time for verifiability. This, of course, is a bit more difficult case, because of the fact that it's WWE programming, but given that there is still one line that Vince will not cross (saying that a major health event is not part of the show when it really is), and Cole breaking kayfabe, I think it would have been acceptable until such time as written sources (more easily verifiable) were available. rdfox 76 (talk) 12:00, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a reliable source & full story http://www.wwe.com/shows/raw/2012-09-10/jerry-lawler-collapses-at-announce-table-26051089 {{subst:Unsigned|

CNN qualifies as a reliable source. Don't add the stuff from Smith Hart, he's hardly an expert (as proven by his comments--these days, "clinically dead" means that you have no brain activity, and a defibrillator will not bring you back from that) and wasn't on-scene to get his information. WWE.com is a special case, as most of that website is kayfabe and thus not reliable. However, the WWE corporate website (WWEcorporate.com or corporate.WWE.com) is a non-kayfabe site, intended for investors and the business world, and is a reliable source for real-world WWE press releases. In general, the Wrestling Observer website (wrestlingobserver.com) is considered a reliable source by Wikipedia for wrestling-related items, as it's a non-kayfabe information source that is widely respected within the industry. rdfox 76 (talk) 12:00, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Let me add a bit about this. Smith Hart got his info from Jeremy Prophet. I know a fair number of the wrestlers who work in S Ontario from my ring-side photography hobby - some of them have indicated that Prophet is a less-than-reliable source (to put it kindly). I've read plenty of negative commentary on other websites thus far. I'd rather not contribute to the negativity, as getting videotapes in the mail of the WMC shows in my post-teen years was always something to look forward to, but I feel it's time to stop and reflect on this. If Lawler doesn't die or isn't forced to retire from the business as a result of his heart attack, then it's questionable whether this event was of lasting significance. Witnessing the inordinate amount of attention this has received on Wikipedia, in this article and in others as well, shows to me a rather flagrant disregard not only for WP:NOTNEWS, but for the {{PW-FrequentTarget}} tag placed at the top of this talk page. OTOH, people still make references to "Lance Russell's Baxter suit passed away" 35 years later. People still talk about the empty arena match 30 years later. Usually, talk about the empty arena match is focused on Lawler because he won the match, even though the concept of the empty arena match was clearly the invention of Terry Funk and not Lawler. NBC aired its own version of 60 Minutes hosted by Tom Snyder, which profiled Lawler in 1979, or years before he ever met Andy Kaufman. There's no credible reason to treat his early career as irrelevant in favor of rehashing news items and storylines, creating serious undue weight in the process as I previously explained. If this continues, future generations will view these articles as nothing more than curious snapshots in time, much like I'm sure today's readers view rec.sport.pro-wrestling in its heyday. I really didn't want to tag this article with {{Recentism}}, but now I feel it's necessary.RadioKAOS (talk) 23:21, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SOFIXIT. If you are knowledgeable about his early career and feel that it's getting short shrift, then find references and improve the information on his early career. There's nobody stopping you, and it's not our job to fix it for you. As for yesterday's results, it's generally agreed that having a heart attack on live national television is something that is notable and should be mentioned in the victim's Wikipedia article. I hardly feel that four sentences totaling 1.7kB (including the templated references) is undue weight in a 72kB article. rdfox 76 (talk) 01:56, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Twelve sentences now. InedibleHulk (talk) 12:25, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yup - because it's a current happening, people keep updating with the latest information. In a year or two it will likely end up being shrunk back down to just a few sentences when folks have the full overview on what happened. Tabercil (talk) 14:56, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
