:It started out as a perfectly acceptable word for someone with a disease which causes spasms. But over time the word has become less and less acceptable. I imagine that my answer should be obvious, Fabiform, but just in case you cannot guess it, no. Mutilation and modification are two quite different things. All mutilations are modifications, but not all modifications are mutilations. [[User:Tannin|Tannin]] |
Three things, Fabiform. |
# There is no consensus - I am far from the only one who is not happy with the push to bowdlerise this entry. |
# You have, as always, been the soul of courtesy. |
# My irritation is not with you |
: Best -- [[User:Tannin|Tannin]] |
Hmm ....an interesting line of thought, Fabiform, which seems perfectly rational on first sight, but rests on a false premise—the assumption that ''mutilation'' is the POV word when there are, in fact, ''two'' key words. Let's set aside their different dictionary meanings for a moment and pretend that, implications and emotional baggage aside, they are exact synonyms. (We are doing this little thought experiment in order to disentangle the literal meanings and the subtextual meanings, so as to be able to consider them in isolation and thus see them more clearly.) I agree that it's possible (and indeed common) to associate a sense of damage with the term ''mutilation''. But just as ''mutilation'' carries an unbidden association, so to does ''modfication''. ''Modification'' invites the reader to associate a sense of change for the better, or at the very least, change without damage. Even if you reject the "for the better" implication I have drawn (though I think you will find that ''modification'' is, in practice, used in this way more often than not), even the second and lesser implication is every bit as POV as that which you attached to ''mutilation''. It is more subtle and thus harder to spot immediately, but every bit as real. |
Now, let's set aside the implication side of things and consider, in turn, the literal meanings, alone, minus baggage. A ''modification'' is "any change"—adding, removing, altering in any way at all. A ''mutilation'' is a particular type of modification that involves removing something. (Or, in a different sense of the word, so altering something as to make it disfunctional, but that sense is not especially relevant in this context.) In other words, the two words do ''not'' share the same meaning. They are different terms, with different meanings. All genital mutilations are modifications, but not all genital modifications are mutilations. It is entirely appropriate, it follows, that there should be different articles for these two different (but related) subjects. |
As to the merit of the present two articles, I have no comment at present. I'll have to read them over carefully, and am pushed for time tonight, |

The ''CC-by-sa'' license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the [[GFDL]], but it allows '''other projects''', such as [[WikiTravel]], to use our articles. Since you are among the [[Wikipedia:List_of_Wikipedians_by_number_of_edits|top 1000]] Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at ''minimum'' those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information: |

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "'''<nowiki>{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}</nowiki>'''" template into their user page, but there are other options at [[Wikipedia:Template messages/User namespace#Licensing Templates|Template messages/User namespace]]. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page: |
:'''Option 1''' |
:<nowiki>I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:</nowiki> |
:<nowiki>{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}</nowiki> |
'''OR''' |
:'''Option 2''' |
:<nowiki>I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions to any [[U.S. state]], county, or city article as described below:</nowiki> |
:<nowiki>{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}</nowiki> |
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "'''<nowiki>{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}</nowiki>'''" with "'''<nowiki>{{MultiLicensePD}}</nowiki>'''". If you only prefer using the [[GFDL]], I would like to know that too. ''Please let me know'' what you think at my '''[[User talk:Ram-Man|talk page]]'''. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- [[User:Ram-Man|Ram-Man]] ([http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit§ion=new comment]| [[User talk:Ram-Man|talk)]] 18:08, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC) |

==RFC pages on VfD== |

Should RFC pages be placed on VfD to be deleted? I'm considering removing [[Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Slrubenstein]], [[Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Jwrosenzweig]] and [[Wikipedia:Requests for comment/John Kenney]] from [[WP:VFD]]. Each of them was listed by [[User:CheeseDreams|CheeseDreams]]. Your comments on whether I should do this would be appreciated. - [[User:Ta bu shi da yu|Ta bu shi da yu]] 03:38, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC) |

How's my favorite mega-bean? I miss your shining wiki-presence, but found it hovering about the caption jimbo page on meta, and found solace in the midst of crisis. I hope you are having an amazing growing season, wherever you are... [[User:Sj|+sj ]][[User Talk:Sj|<font color="#ff6996">+</font>]] 07:15, 12 May 2005 (UTC) |

:Hiya! Yes I do look in on the project quite often (and I've been reading [[WP:SIGN|the signpost]] as well which is a nice way to keep in touch and not miss anything major). It's sunny and wet here (in turns), so excellent growing weather. I tend to do things in fits and starts, so I may well come back and bless you all with my fabiformous presence some time in the future when the urge to copyedit, create, impart wisdom, etc comes back to me. Thanks for the note. :) [[User:Fabiform|fabiform]] | [[User talk:Fabiform|talk]] 17:44, 12 May 2005 (UTC) |

Hi, just to let you know that the list of UK participants at the [[Wikipedia:UK Wikipedians' notice board|UK notice board]] was getting rather long, so I have replaced it with the above category which I have added to your user page. -- [[User:Francs2000|Francs2000]] | [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Francs2000&action=edit§ion=new Talk] [[Image:Flag of the United Kingdom.svg|25px|<nowiki></nowiki>]] 30 June 2005 19:24 (UTC) |

You have contributed to [[Buckinghamshire]] in the past, so may I invite you to contribute to a dispute that is breaking out. Some guy who is obsessing about the traditional counties has plonked a great big infobox in the article. It's not useless stuff, but in my view it belongs in [[History of Buckinghamshire]], not in the current main article. But I'll leave you to make your own mind up. Have a look and contribute to [[talk:Buckinghamshire]], please. --[[User:Concrete Cowboy|Concrete Cowboy]] 23:11, 17 August 2005 (UTC) |

== Eye chart license == |
Hi, |
at [[:Image:Iridology iris eye chart left mirror.jpg]] you quoted the copyright owner giving permission, but it isn't clear what exactly he gave the permission for. Did he explicitly agree to license the images under the GFDL? (I want to upload the charts to Commons, but without that information, they would probably get deleted.) |
Thanks, --[[User:Tgr|Tgr]] 19:22, 30 August 2005 (UTC) |
:Hi Tgr. :) I know I did ask specifically about the GFDL, but his reply was, as you see, somewhat vague. The more I look back on it, and with the benefit of having seen a lot more of these charts, the more I question whether or not he was the copyright holder to begin with. If I were you I wouldn't move it over the the commons. Sorry! [[User:Fabiform|fabiform]] | [[User talk:Fabiform|talk]] 22:16, 31 August 2005 (UTC) |

Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Dr David Kelly.jpg]]'''. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the [[copyright]] status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. |
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{tl|GFDL}} to release it under the [[GFDL]]. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]], and then use a tag such as {{tlp|fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use]]. See [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags]] for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. |
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "[[Special:Contributions/{{PAGENAME}}|my contributions]]" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on [[wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images.2FMedia|criteria for speedy deletion]]. Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:WWJD.jpg]]'''. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the [[copyright]] status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page. |

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{tl|GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the [[GFDL]].
