Xubuntu (IPA: /ˈzubuntu/) is a derivative of Ubuntu Linux based on the Xfce desktop environment, made and optimized for lower end machines. The distribution will use GTK+ 2 applications where possible. Xubuntu was originally rumored to release alongside Breezy Badger (5.10) versions of the Ubuntu line, but an official release date has not been decided yet. The next Xubuntu release is planned to be as close as possible to the release of Ubuntu 6.06; Dapper Drake.

Installing Xubuntu

There are no official CDs of Xubuntu available, but it can be easily installed on Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) by following the Xubuntu wiki instructions.

However, the beta version of the Xubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) CD image has been released, it is available at here.

Similar projects

A similar project to Xubuntu is UbuntuLite (http://www.ubuntulite.org/). UbuntuLite simply aims at being a lightweight desktop, whereas Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce, though also trying to be lightweight.
