Any of the tissue or tissue systems of plants can contain idioblasts (Sachs 1874). They are isolated cells which differ from neighboring plant tissues. They contain chemicals, normally in crystalline format such as acrid tasting and poisonous Calcium oxalate. Idioblasts are divided into three main categories;excretory, tracheoid and sclerenchymatous. The chemicals are excreted by the plant and stored as bundles of crystals (druse form) or as individual crystals (raphide [needle] form). The chemical packets appear to have no function other than a poisonous deterrent to herbivores.
