Xubuntu (pronounced ZOO-boon-too) is a derivative of Ubuntu based on the popular Xfce desktop environment, made and optimized for lower end machines. The distribution will use GTK+ 2 applications where possible. Xubuntu was originally rumored to release alongside Breezy Badger (5.10) versions of the Ubuntu line, but an official release date has not been decided yet. The current release is planned to be as close as possible to the release of Ubuntu 6.04; "Dapper Drake".

Installing Xubuntu

There are no official CDs of Xubuntu available, but it can be easily installed on either Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) or the development version 6.04 (Dapper Drake) by following the Xubuntu wiki instructions.

Packages

In order to stay within the 'lightweight' distro market, Xubuntu is producing a list of packages [1] to be included by default that have few dependencies and require a lower specified machine to operate well. At present (Vincent) the list of confirmed packages is:

Similar Projects

A similar project to Xubuntu is UbuntuLite [2]. UbuntuLite simply aims at being a lightweight desktop, whereas Xubuntu is Ubuntu with Xfce, though also trying to be lightweight.
