I'm wondering if anybody that speaks Dutch could comment on the origin of the name of a local creek called the Poesten Kill. Kill is obviously old Dutch for creek, but I have conflicting evidence regarding the first part of the name. One of the sources states that Poesten means "frothy", "foamy", or "bubbly" in old Dutch. (The other source says it comes from the name of a local farmer, which is probably more likely.) Can anyone comment on whether or not they're familiar with the word poesten meaning frothy (or anything else, for that matter) in Dutch? upstateNYer 23:01, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kill is indeed a old word, it isn't used anymore in the Dutch language and I don't know what Poesten means, I actually have never heard about it before, because there is no such word (in modern Dutch). Steppler 15:17, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A while back, somebody depopulated the Category:Dutch knights, removing baseball players Sidney Ponson, Calvin Maduro, and Gene Kingsale, all of whom have received the Order of Orange-Nassau, in the grade Knight. The edit summary said "A decoration is not a knighthood." Soon afterward, the Category:Dutch knights was deleted for being empty.

Can anyone clarify whether it is correct to refer to members of the Order of Orange-Nassau, in the grade Knight, as "Dutch knights"? Thanks. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:40, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes the order of O-N is a dutch knighhood. See Category:Orders of knighthood of the Netherlands

However I would not support creation of a category Dutch knights as there are thousands (if not tens of thousands) knights in the Netherlands (especially in the orders of Oranje-Nassau and the Netherlands Lion. Arnoutf (talk) 16:23, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I Google-Translated the article Dutch Virgin Islands from nl.wiki, but there were a few things that I couldn't quite clear up. A couple are marked with ^{[clarification needed]} tags, and one is shielded as hidden text (visible only when editing). I'd appreciate any help from Dutch speakers in fixing those last bits. The article nl:Senegambia (17e eeuw) seems notable (though not totally sure what to call it in English). It's short, but somehow the way it's written makes it nigh-incomprehensible in GoogleTranslate. If any Dutch speaker wants to take a stab at it, it may be worth having on en.wiki. Hello Matthew. I'm working on the translation and I've called the article Senegambia (Dutch West India Company). Feel free to change this if you consider it wise. Because English is not my native tongue it can't be expected that the translation will be perfect grammarwise. Needless to say that I welcome any improvements made. I have had two battles regarding links from the English language Wikipedia to articles in the Dutch language Wikipedia. In both cases, other editors have attempted to revoke the links that I placed in the list of winners of the Elfstedentocht to the Dutch articles where, in my judgement, there would never be an English language article. Do members of this group have any comments?

BTW, I am half Dutch and half English by parentage, but having been taught Afrikaans at school will never have the ability to write in Dutch (though I can read it). Martinvl (talk) 20:21, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm currently working on a Dutch windmill article in my sandbox. In the mill is a poem by the mill's builder. As the mill was built in 1821 the poem is out of copyright by now, so I've quoted it in full. What I need help with is translating it into English. Is there any editor willing to assist with this? While updating the article on Lipke Holthuis, I came across a link to a photo of him, which I would like to include in that article. Could a Dutch speaker please confirm that "Het beeldmateriaal is rechtenvrij en in hoge resolutie te downloaden" does indeed mean that the images are available under a free license (presumably {{PD-author}}), and offer an opinion as to whether that applies to the photo of Prof. Holthuis, or merely to the images on the linked page. My father went on a football tour in 1968 with an English amateur club called Didcot Town and played a club called Hardingsveld, I am looking for some information on this club so that we can contact them. FYI - A massive discussion is taking place at a Request for comment (RfC) Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people. About 50k of articles are currently unreferenced and therefore in danger of deletion, some of those are on Dutch subjects. I have added the proper template on the main page to have a bot generate the cleanup list after some days (hopefully). The cleanup link in the title above (now a redlink) will then point to a list of unreferenced articles with the WikiProject Netherlands template on its talk page. Please revise articles on the list, when possible,

1. review them for contentious unsourced information pr WP:BLP concerns
2. add references (you may e.g. lift references from the Dutch page, if that page exists)
3. remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template from the article.
