While Xubuntu has not been officially released, it is a trivial matter to convert one's desktop environment to XFCE by installing the "xubuntu-desktop" package in an [[Advanced Packaging Tool|APT]] repository. Simply pull up a terminal, and type:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
On a fresh install, one can install the "server" version of Ubuntu (a bare-bones installation; has no desktop environment installed by default) and install the xubuntu-desktop package - effectively installing Xubuntu.

The reason the Ubuntu project provides forks for every different Desktop Environment, even though you could easily do it yourself with apt-get and editing .xsession is because Ubuntu was desgned for idiots.

Xubuntu (pronounced ZOO-bun-too) is a planned derivative of Ubuntu based on the popular Xfce desktop environment, made and optimized for lower end machines. Xubuntu was originally rumored to release alongside Breezy Badger (5.10) versions of the Ubuntu line, but an official release date has not been decided just yet. The first release could be released alongside 6.04; "Dapper Drake". However, Xubuntu is available through the Breezy Badger repositories and can be installed by selecting the "xubuntu-desktop" package in an synaptic or by using apt by typing (on a terminal):

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

On a fresh install, one can install the "server" version of Ubuntu (a bare-bones installation; has no desktop environment installed by default) and install the xubuntu-desktop package - effectively installing Xubuntu.
