Predecessors
The Agência Brasileira de Inteligência (ABIN) or Brazilian Intelligence Agency is the successor organization to the infamous Serviço Nacional de Informações (SNI) or National Intelligence Service formed during the dictatorship of Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco in the mid-1960's.
Through its DOI-CODI department the SNI was responsible for censorship, torture, murder and other actions against members of student movements, artists or politicians that challenged the government. The SNI was eventually replaced by the shortlived Subsecretaria de Inteligência (SSI) which was in turn was replaced by ABIN.
The SNI was alleged to have participated with the CIA and other agencies in "Condor Operation", intended to oppose the spread of left-wing ideologies and communism throughout Latin America by promoting and supporting right wing governments.
The current agency
Today, ABIN is a fairly unknown agency that went through a lot of changes and names to clean itself of the old SNI reputation, and deals with internal intelligence and the military.
Current Functions
ABIN's main function is to investigate real and potential threats to the Brazilian society and government and defend the Democratic State of Law, the Brazilian sovereignty and the effectiveness of the public power.
Motto
The ABIN motto is "A Inteligência em defesa da sociedade, do Estado Democrático de Direito e dos interesses nacionais." which is Portuguese for "Intelligence for the defense of society, of the democratic Rule of Law and of national interests".
